| Chapter 8 | |||||
| That night after hours of searching, we still hadn’t found Nick, and I was beginning to lose hope. I knew in my heart that he was alive, but I couldn’t convince my mind that he wasn’t dead. I eventually just gave up and sat down on the couch and started crying. JJ came over to me and sat down next to me. “Oh Bethany, I’m so sorry. I know we’ll find him. I just know we will!” “Yeah, but what if we don’t? What if he ends up being dead? Then what?” “I’m not sure, but I know that inside of you somewhere, you know he’s alive.” “Yes, but I’m so scared, JJ. Nick is my world; I love him so much! He’s the best thing that ever happened to me. He keeps me together and helps me along in life. I’m not sure what I’d do without him!” “Oh Beth, I’ll always be here for you, and I know Nick would want you to be happy if he did die. Plus, you two are meant to be together, and I know you will always be together even in death. The rest of the guys will be there for you too!” “Oh JJ, I hope so. I really do.” We sat there for a few more minutes and then the phone rang. I ran to get it. “Hello?” “Hi, Miss Collins?” “Yeah?” “This is Sergeant Jones, I have some good news and some bad news.” “Ok, the good news?” “Well, the good news is that Sam Smith decided to speak and we know that he has Nick and that Nick’s alive. The bad news is that he won’t tell us where Nick is.” “Oh thank God! Where is Sam?” “He’s down here at the station.” “Ok, I’ll be down in 5 minutes.” I hung up. “JJ! JJ! He’s alive! Nick’s alive!” She looked at me like I was crazy. “What?” “That was Mr. Jones; Sam told them that he has Nick and he’s alive. But he won’t tell them where Nick is. So, I’m going to go down there and beg him to tell me where he is.” “That’s great! Do you want me to go with you?” “Yeah, if you want. But let’s go now.” I grabbed the keys and headed out the door. We got to the station in record time. We ran inside and found Mr. Jones. “Hello, that was fast!” he said as we walked up. “Yeah, Nick is my life and I don’t want to lose him. So where is Sam?” “He’s in the back. Follow me.” We followed him down a long hall and to a dark room. “He’s in there.” “Can I go in?” “Sure, if you want. We'll watch from the other side.’ “Ok,” I said opening the door. He was sitting at a table looking at his feet. He was wearing an orange outfit and his hands were handcuffed behind his back. He looked up as I walked in the room. “Bethany, you’re here!” “Yes, but not for you. I want to know where Nick is!” “Oh, and I thought you cared about me. We’ll get to your little boyfriend when I feel like it!” “Care about you?! I only care about Nick! Why did you take him from me?” “Because you don’t need him anymore.” “DONT NEED HIM?! DONT NEED HIM!? He’s the only person I’ve ever truly loved! He helped me when I moved down here and was scared to death of anyone who approached me. And all because of you! You ruined my life and he put it back together!” He was silent for a minute before saying, “Ok, I’ll tell you where he is, but you have to convince them to let me go.” “I can’t do that, it’s not in my power. Only the judge can do that.” “Well then, I’ll have to figure out another way. But until then, I can’t let you find Nick.” “What!? Please tell me! Please, please, please! He means the world to me! I’d rather die a horrible death than never see him again. He makes me happy, and we were meant to be together! Plus, I’m pregnant with his child!” I wasn’t really, but I knew that would make him tell me, and I was very desperate. “You are?” “Yes, and you can’t let my baby grow up without a father, so please tell me where he is!” At that moment a single tear ran down my cheek. “Well, if it means that much to you, and because you’re pregnant, I’ll tell you. Only because I want you to be happy. And I finally see how happy he makes you.” “Oh thank you!” I said giving him a huge hug. “Thank you so much!” “Ok, he’s in the old warehouse behind the service station where I killed the lady.” “Ok, thanks again!” I walked to the door and walked out. JJ and Mr. Jones were standing there with shocked expressions on their faces. I walked down the hall to where Sam couldn’t hear me. “I’m not pregnant! I made that up so he’d tell me where Nick is.” “Thank goodness! I nearly had a heart attack! But why did you say that?” “Because he grew up without a father.” “Oh, smart thinking, Beth!” “Yeah, that was pretty clever,” Mr. Jones added. “Yeah, I know. Now let’s go find Nick!” I said with a smile. |
