| I was so shocked. I didn’t know what to say. “I don’t feel like dealing with this right now. I’m just not ready,” I said to Mr. Jones. “Oh ok, I understand,” he said patting me on the back. Nick and I walked in the house and sat on the couch. “Nick, I’m so glad you’re ok. I almost died when I saw you were gone.” “I’m sorry.” “It's ok, you didn’t know. What exactly happened?” “Well, I had just gotten up when I noticed that the side door was open. I went over to close it, and he grabbed me. I tried to scream, but he hit me over the head with something and dragged me off. When I came to, I was in the room where you found me. I looked around and called for you. He came in and said, ‘She's not here, yet...’ ‘Where is she? What did you do to her?’ I asked. ‘Oh nothing yet, she’s still at your house sound asleep. She’s in for a surprise when she wakes up.’ At that point I knew he was up to something, but I didn’t know what. I just hoped he didn’t plan on hurting either you or me.” “Wow, that’s scary. I wish I’d been awake to help you.” “Me too, but I’m glad you’re ok. Oh how’d you manage to get him to tell you where I was?” I smiled. “Well. . . it’s a long story. But I told him the truth of our love, and I told him that... please don’t get mad... but I told him that I was kinda... um...um...um... pregnant with your child.” Nick looked at me wide-eyed. “What!?” “I know. I figured that it would make him tell me where you were. See, he grew up without a father, so I knew that it would make him feel bad if my child grew up without a father.” “Well, I have to admit that’s pretty clever, and you never know when that might come true!” Nick said with a smile and did the eyebrow thing that I love. “Nickolas Gene Carter!” I said giving him a look. He laughed and kissed me. We sat there for a few more minutes then got up and went into the kitchen to get something to eat. “That was interesting” I said sitting down at the table. Nick laughed. “Yeah, I’m such a funny guy,” Nick said. “Yeah, and that’s why I love you.” Nick smiled. “Ok, so what do you want to do eat?” “Um, how about ice cream?” “Ice cream?” “Yeah, what’s wrong with ice cream?” “Nothing.” “Ok then,” Nick smiled and opened the freezer. “Cookie dough?” I nodded. He took out a bowl and put four scoops of ice cream in it. Then took out two spoons and set it on the table. “Ah! Behold my beautiful creation,” Nick said sitting down. We ate the ice cream and talked. Then when we were done I suggested that we watch a movie. We walked inside the theater and picked a movie. “Nicky, I want something funny, anything but a tragedy.” Nick laughed. “I know what you mean.” He picked “Dr. Dolittle,” a very funny movie. Childish, but funny. The movie was good, even though we didn’t really pay much attention to the movie. (We were talking, don’t get any ideas people!). When it was over we walked back to the bedroom and got ready for bed. “Hey Nicky, do me a favor and be here when I wake up in the morning.” “I will, I promise,” he said kissing me. “Good.” “Hey Bethany?” “Yeah?” “How did you know I was alive?” “I just knew, I could feel it inside of me.” |
