Chapter 12: The Past Returns | ||||||
"So, out of all the Backstreet Boys, who have you spent the most time with so far?" "Well, Nick and I have probably talked the most. We seem to have some things in common, as well. We both love to draw-" The man clicked the radio off. He was furious. It had only been five years since he had given her his lesson. He told her that if she wouldn't be his, she wouldn't be anyone's. After he had driven his car away, he figured he had taken care of her sufficiently enough. For the rest of his senior year at school, she never went up to any boys. She remained to herself, and no one appeared to know why. He didn't need to worry that she would tell anyone. She was too much of a coward. But now here she was. On the radio, talking about the Backstreet Boys. Boasting about spending her time and having interests with Nick Carter. The bitch was foolish to have forgotten my vow to her, he thought with a sneer. I will have to remind her. **************************** Brian watched Jenny as she boarded the bus again. He was so proud of her. She had been pretty clueless to the answers of the questions in the interview, but she guessed without showing her uncertainty, and miraculously, correctly. In fact, she had been good enough, that the other guys didn't even know she wasn't a fan yet. Maybe if he kept looking out for her, no one would have to know. As the bus started to move, Jenny began wondering if her answers were accurate. She would surely die of embarrassment if one of the guys confronted her about not knowing them very well. Mustering up the courage to ask Brian if she had been right, Jenny slowly gained her feet and walked over to him. She didn't have to say a word. Her expression said everything. "You were right," he confessed with a laughing grin. "REALLY?!" she practically squeaked. She couldn't believe she had been right. So she hadn't made a fool of herself either! No one knew about her yet. Except Brian. Somehow, having him know the truth felt liberating. She didn't have to act like she knew what she was doing with him. He knew she didn't know what was going on. Brian just snickered at her amazement. He swore to himself that she had the best reactions. Now if only he could get the right reaction out of her when it came to Nick. Sure, he enjoyed his friend's discomfort, but he also felt sorry for Nick. Sometimes while Jenny was glaring at Nick, or ignoring him, he seemed down right pitiful. And that wasn't Nick. Brian shrugged it off. That particular problem could be dealt with later. Jenny gave Brian a half-hearted sneer. She didn't feel up to fussing over his attitude right now, though. She was too happy and relieved that the interview was over and she had come out with her dignity. Making her way to the seats, she noticed the only open spot was next to Nick. A glance at AJ, Howie, and Kevin told her that they had planned it that way. Dragging her feet over to him, she plopped in the seat. She made sure they were by no means close to each other and kept her back rigid. She had no intentions of getting comfortable. Looking at Nick's face, Jenny was shocked to see anger. She couldn't remember if she had seen him pissed yet. Her hands suddenly got sweaty and cold at the same time. She wanted to run. She didn't know if he would strike her or not. I need to get out of here! NOW! Nick was so disappointed that she didn't want to sit by him. She had made it obvious enough when she had stared around the bus, practically begging with her eyes for another place to sit. I have been so nice to her! he complained to himself. All the others ever do is laugh or something. Yet she still rather sit by them! He couldn't take it anymore, and he sure couldn't mask his anger when she looked at him. He regretted it right away. When he saw her face turn pale and her eyes widen in horror, he didn't know what to make of it. He knew he was sorry, though. He noticed her inching off the chair, trying to get away from his wrath. Did she think he was going to hurt her? He hoped not, but took hold of her arm to make sure she didn't leave. Her reaction surprised the hell out of him. When Jenny had felt his hand on her arm, she covered her head and cried out in fear. Memories streamed into her mind. She imagined he was her father, yelling at her for trying to protect her mom. Or maybe he was Jake, angry over her denial to him. It didn't matter who he was, however. He was about to hit her, she knew, and she would protect herself the way experience had taught her. Her scream echoed through the bus, followed only by silence. Brian had come over, in time to see everything. When he saw Jenny cowering and Nick looking confused and frightened, he knew Nick hadn't intended to scare her so. She evidently didn't have any clue to what his intentions were. Still, what could have caused such terror? Why would someone hold such fear? |
