About Raamaayan

(1) It consists of 40,000 Shlok distributed among 500 Sarg (chapters), and the chapters being arranged under six Kaand (sections). The seventh Kaand is separate and has been written later.

(2) Raamaayan is said to be derived from Gaayatree hymn. 

As Gaayatree Mantra has 24 syllables, it also has 24 Books of 1,000 verses each, although this version is not available now.
