Sarg 75 - Bharat Convinces Kaushalyaa

When Bharat gained consciousness, he said to ministers - "I never even dreamed of kingdom, nor I have said anything about it to my mother. I didn't even know about Raam's Raajya Abhishek (crowning ceremony) , because I was at my Naanaa's place with Shatrughn. I don't even know that how this situation arose."

Kaushalyaa heard Bharat, so she said to Sumitraa - "It seems that Bharat has come. He can foresee things. I want to see him." So she got up and went to see him. Now Bharat and Shatrughn were also coming to see Kaushalyaa on the same way. So she met them on the way and seeing them fell on the ground, and got fainted. When she woke up, she said to Bharat - "Now you should be happy to get this kingdom without any hurdles, because your mother has kept it safe for you and she has exiled my son. Let Kaikeyee send me too where my dear son is doing Tapasyaa, or I will go myself with Sumitraa on the same path. Kaikeyee has given this wealthy kingdom to you from Dashrath." Thus Kaushalyaa insulted Bharat with harsh words.

Hearing this Bharat got extremely sad as if somebody had pricked his wounds. He fell on the feet of Maa Kaushalyaa. When he had gathered himself, he said to her - "Hey Maa, Why are you insulting an ignorant? You know yourself that how much I love Raam, and with whose consultation Raam has been sent to forest. Maa, she may do anything she wants. With whoever's consultation Raam has been sent to forest, she should bear the results of those sinners, like that master who takes the work from his servant and snatch his money instead of paying him; or like that who takes the Sankalp (vow) to give Dakshinaa to Braahman for Yagya but doesn't give it; or she should never see Raam."

Bharat vowed and tried to convince Kaushalyaa that he didn't know anything about all this. Kaushalyaa said - "I have got my life back after knowing the truth. I am happy that greed did not move your Dharm. Hey Bharat, If your vows are true, then you should get the great people's Lok." After this she made him sit in her lap and wept. Bharat also wept.

Sarg 76 - Bharat Performs Dashrath's Last Rites

Seeing Bharat so sad, Vashishth Jee said - "Don't be so sad now. We should make arrangements to perform  Raajaa's last rites." Bharat greeted Guru Jee and made arrangements for Raajaa's last rites. His dead body was taken out of the oil pond and placed on a gem-studded bedding. Seeing Raajaa thus Bharat wept and said - "Why did you decide to leave this world after sending Raam to forest only? You did not wait for me?

Vashishth Jee asked Bharat to do the rites, so he did Havan in the Agni (fire) brought from Raajaa's Agni Shaalaa (where Agni was kept). Raajaa's body was kept on a vehicle and his employees took it. A pyre was made of sandalwood. Braahman kept the body on pyre, Mantra from Saam Ved were pronounced. Raajaa's all queens were brought outside the city, they revolved around the pyre, offered Jalaanjali in Sarayoo River and came back to city.

Sarg 77 - Farewell to Raajaa

After ten days, Bharat did rites for Aatm Shuddhi (self purification), and twelfth day, Bharat did Raajaa's Shraadh and donated lots of money to Braahman, servants and maidservants; houses etc to Braahman for Raajaa's Parlok. On thirteenth day Bharat cried and cried and got unconscious remembering Raajaa.

Later he went to the place of pyre and said - "Raam is now in forest, then how did you leave me alone? How did you leave Kaushalyaa also whose son has been sent to forest." He cried seeing Raajaa's bones. Bharat, Shatrughn and ministers all got unconscious. After some time Shatrughn said - "You are not here, brother is in forest, so I don't want to live, because this situation is out of my control therefore I will burn myself. I will not go back to Ikshwaaku Vansh's Ayodhyaa. I do not like to live there. I will go to Tapo Van (where Tapaswee live)."

Hearing Shatrughn weeping like this Vashishth Jee said - "You should not delay in collecting your father's bones because all sorrows and pleasures, hunger and thirst, life and death, are to be tolerated by living beings, then why do you cry so much. No living being is spared from them. Then Tattva Gyaanee (who has elemental knowledge) Sumantra lifted up Shatrughn and consoled him. Both brothers performed some other rites also.
