Anthony Nicholls

Anthony Nicholls was born in Windsor, Berkshire. Before playing the part of Tremayne, he was in many stage and screen productions, dating as far back as 1937. He was a late-comer to acting though, he was a cloth merchant before his enthusiasm for drama led to his decision to take up acting as a profession when he was in his twenties. He began with a walk-on role in The King and Mistress Shore at the Little Theatre in London. He played another small part in the London production of Operette and immediately stepped into one of the more important roles when the show went on tour. He moved on into the world of Shakespeare as juvenile lead with the Old Vic Company. From Shakespeare, he returned to the musical world as Prince Metterling in The Dancing Years, playing the part until the outbreak of World War Two, when he went into the Royal Artillery. He resumed his acting career in 1950 in Accolade and then Tobias and the Angel before making his New York debut in A Midsummer Night's Dream with the Old Vic Company, which toured the US and Canada.

Much of his career since then has been spent in Shakespeare, and he's twice played the Ghost in Hamlet once to Michael Redgrave's Hamlet and the second time with Peter O'Toole. He toured Europe in this production, recieving critical acclaim for his performance. Many other Shakespeare productions in which he has played include The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, Othello and Much Ado About Nothing.

Anthony met his future wife, Faith Kent, when he appeared with her in Vanity Fair. He went on to appear in the films The Pumpkin Eater and Our Mother's House, which also featured Faith, but they didn't have any scenes together. He appeared in the London production of Ross Ronald Storrs and repeated this role in New York. He since appeared in all leading festivals, including Glyndebourne and Edinburgh, and has become a member of the Old Vic Company, now the National Theatre. He took a break during The Champions to go with the company to Canada.

His film career began in 1948. He played important roles in such productions as The Hasty Heart, The Franchise Affair, Dunkirk, Seven Days to Noon, Othello and A Man for All Seasons. His many TV shows include such plays as The Passionate Pilgrim, Autumn Garden, Media, When the Kissing had to Stop and in The Saint and in many other series.

Anthony's long and distinguisshed career unfortunately ended when he passed away in February 1977, aged 74.
