Christmas in Big Bend Country, Dec 1999

Davis Mountain Indian Lodge State Park

We, Bill and Nancy, arrived at the State Park (over 5000 feet elevation) driving into sleet and snow the last twenty miles as we achieved elevation off the plains from Pecos, TX, where we left Interstate 20, heading south (driving under Interstate 10 in the process). Even in the snow and the twilight, we managed to find the motor home of Annette (our daughter) and Larry (her husband) in the RV Park just inside the state park grounds. The blue and white 38 foot diesel is affectionately named "Harvey the RV" by Annette and Larry, the Mobile Mavericks.

The front window of the RV was filled with Christmas presents in their wrappings, just as if there were a tree in the center of the big front window. The picture below was taken as we left, but, shows the setting, the lights along the pull-out, and Larry working at the plugins, at the right. I'm leaning on our car, left, without an apparent care in the world!

You can see above, the day after Christmas, that the snow didn't last. We were very happy to stay in Harvey the RV for Christmas eve and Christmas day, however, while the temperature warmed. Hot chili, gift exchanges, games, movies and satellite TV (but no phone!) made for a great Christmas eve and morning. On Christmas afternoon, we got in the four-wheel drive Ford Explorer they tow, and drove over to the rustic adobe Inn in the State Park and ate a very nice Christmas dinner in their restaurant.

Nancy took this picure of Annette and I on the patio outside the restaurant after dinner.

Later in the afternoon we went to visit the Fort Davis National Historical Site. Later yet, we moved to the Ramada Inn in the town of Alpine, a few miles south.

The following day, they moved Harvey down to Alpine, also, and we left on our trip to the Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande.
