Here are some great artists from Central California and the Bay Area! |
| Most people don't think of California as a blues mecca...but
there are some of the best blues musicians in the business out here on the left
coast. Monterey is home to the BEST two day party in California, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival. Each June, the sea otters and
blues fans are treated to some of the biggest names in blues. Watch this space
for the 1999 lineup. Although perhaps not as well known as its sister, the Monterey Jazz
Festival, the blues fest has helped make central California home to some great
artists. Here are a few of my favorites... |
Red Beans & Rice |
![]() |
Red Beans & Rice hail from Monterey, CA. They sport a hard driving guitar and harp-based sound that includes originals as well as classic blues occasionally sprinkled with some New Orleans flavoring. They have a terrific CD, "Nothin' But the Blues" and a brand new release, "Can't Get Enough." They were just voted "Most Influential" in entertainment by the Monterey County Herald, sharing the honor with the former mayor of Carmel, Clint Eastwood! Find out more by visiting the official Red Beans & Rice Web Site.

| Sista Monica |
Sista
Monica (a.k.a. Monica Parker) from Santa Cruz, follows in the grand
tradition of great blues belters like Koko Taylor and Big Mama Thorton, but she has a
style and spirit all her own. Just signed to a national record distribution deal,
her first album, "Get Out My Way" is a big favorite with her Central California
followers. She absolutely tore up the 1997 Monterey Bay Blues Festival (see
her picture in the Blues Festival Photo Gallery. Find out
more about her by visiting this excellent site. |
| Coco Montoya |
Blind Pig Records recording artist Coco Montoya has established himself as one of the
elite guitarists of our time. A former drummer(!), he learned his blues chops from the
great Albert Collins before spending nearly ten years with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He
was a big hit at the 1996 Monterey Bay Blues Festival closing the festival sharing the
stage for a "guitar summit" with Debbie Davies and Chris Cain. The stage
hands had to get out the fire extinguishers after that one! There's more information about
Coco on this site. |
| Tommy Castro |
| San Francisco resident Tommy Castro
has been tearing up the West Coast blues scene with his fiery guitar and soulful vocals.
He was so impressive on the Presidents Stage at the 1996 Monterey Bay Blues Festival that
he "graduated" to the main stage for the 1997 festival. Tommy Castro is one of the hardest working bluesmen in the business, logging over 300 gigs per year! Every so often he comes to Monterey to play Doc Ricketts' Lab on Cannery Row and invariably sells the place out to the rafters! For a tasty sample of his playing...Click here. For more information and lots of concert photos, check out the official Tommy Castro Band web site. |
