Dragoners
Cecar sat, her rose colored glasses perched lightly on her nose as she fiddled with her hair. The white curls fell everywhere around her face and she couldn't do a thing with them, even on a good day. Tsking, she let them fall around her sun-kissed shoulders and sighed.
You look fine. Quaritoth soothed, sitting in the light coming in the window and studying himself. He glowed, Cecar had made sure of that, and his white looked even brighter against the various hues of brown that graced his hide.
"Are you just saying that so I'll move, or do you mean it?" Cecar asked, and one look at Quaritoth convinced her that he was serious. Chuckling, she turned to look in the mirror again and bit her bottom lip.
"What if they don't like us? What if they change their mind?" She asked worriedly, and Quaritoth rumbled deep in his chest and started strutting around the room.
We will convince them we are worthy. He bellowed, looking back to make sure his tail was still nicely white. Cecar had almost skinned him earlier when he got soot all over his feet, and he'd been walking lightly ever since. Besides, we are good and strong, and we will be the only light colored bonds there.
"You seriously think that matters to them?" Cecar asked the white brown. "What color you are? That's ridiculous."
"Ridiculous or not, he's right." A melodious voice said from the door, and Cecar jumped to her feet, her curls bobbing around her face, and spun to face the door. A tall, skinny woman stood inside the frame, smiling at both Cecar and Quaritoth. "About him being the only light-colored dragon, that is. I'm Ena," she said softly, shaking Cecar's proferred hand. "Airandirth and I came to pick you up and show you the way home."
Home. The word had a funny sound, after all the moving Cecar had done in the past three years. In her entire life, to tell the truth.
"I'm afraid K'ran didn't mention you." Cecar said with a small smile at the woman. She didn't look much older than Cecar herself, but she looked kindly and gentle.
"He wouldn't." She said with a grin. "It was decided you would join my wing after he returned, so he couldn't have told you."
"We've been placed already then." Cecar asked, a small jump flipping her stomach upside down.
Ena nodded, smiling again. "In the Ermelinda Fleet, with Shaeya and myself. You'll be third in command, once we have a full fleet. At the moment, it's just the three of us, though."
"Oh." Was all Cecar could manage, and Quaritoth's head was suddenly beside her, studying Ena very carefully.
It had better get bigger. He grumped after a moment, his tail starting it's lashing again. Cecar glared at him until he stopped.
I'm sure it will, but let's not complain. I mean, come on! They've already placed us.
"If you have all your stuff..." Ena interjected, and Cecar blushed, running to grab her bags and telling Quaritoth to meet her at the flat. She led the way out of the Weyr, seeing as it was Ena's first visit, and paused briefly outside to say a silent good-bye to Quaritoth's birthplace.
Turning, she caught sight of Airandirth and gasped. "She's gorgeous!" Cecar exclaimed, clapping her hands together and rushing over to get a better look at the copper-silver dragoness. Ena was grinning as Cecar ran her hands along the smooth hide and laughed when Quaritoth started lashing his tail again.
Don't tell me your jealous? Quar, you know I love you, and you're the only bond I could ever want.
Quaritoth chose not to answer, but the tail-lashing did stop. Bubbling with questions, Cecar and Ena talked the entire way to Caer Brynmor, and Cecar couldn't wait to meet Shaeya. If she was anything like what Ena explained, the three of them would very likely be as close as sisters.
There will be other males in the fleet, right? Quaritoth finally asked, after having heard enough of Ena and Cecar chatting. Both women laughed, though Airandirth glared at him.
"Yes there will be. With time." Ena finally answered, suddenly smiling and pointing down and to her left. "Welcome home, Cecar."
Cecar turned to look and had her breath taken away yet again. Dragons of all colors milled about the flat and the surrounding mountain, and she was sure more than one was wild. The huge mountain, Oros, loomed on the horizon, pulling your eyes back to it no matter where you looked, and Cecar felt a swell of pride knowing she would be protecting it.
I am pleased. Was all Quaritoth would say when Cecar asked him what he thought, but really, he didn't need to say anything more. She understood completely.
