Senior Fledglings

"No, Spif!" Virinia said firmly, glaring at the dragoness while juggling her two month old daughter in her arms. "You are not even going to think about it again until you're completely grown and Esperanza is...five!"

That's unfair. Spiflyth said with a snort, laying back down on her bed and curling her tail around her lengthening body. Virinia looked at that body and groaned, sitting down and tucking Esperanza back into her elbow as she started rocking. The tiny girl, her emerald eyes sparkling as she kicked and giggled, was not showing any signs of going to sleep.

Turning her attention back to the white green weyrling, Virinia tried not to groan again. She had been a cute hatchling, much more so than most, and much to Virinia's dismay, she was turning into a gorgeous adult, with a well proportioned and well muscled body. It was a shame she was also a terrible flirt.

"'Anza, please." Virinia said with a loud sigh, laying her head back against the chair and closing her own eyes, which happened to be the same stunning green as her daughter's. They had the same hair, as well, midnight black and tight with curls, but that was almost where it stopped. Esperanza had her father's nose and ears, for which Virinia was thankful, but she had Virinia's lips, full to the point of permanently teasing anyone who looked at them. Men, anyway.

Running a hand through her hair, Virinia wished she could have an afternoon to herself, without a flirtatious dragon and a demanding daughter. She could laze in the tub, and sleep! Sleep first, laze later, and she could sit and do something with the curls tumbling around her face...

Spiflyth had to almost bellow to get her attention. Dragging her eyes open, Virinia had to blink a couple of times before she realized who she was seeing. And then she all but jumped up and back, trying to put as much distance between her and the...two men, as possible.

"I didn't realize you were coming." She said, her voice hinting along an accusation.

"He knows I helped you." The one standing inside her door said with a shrug of his shoulders, and the other stepped forward, an odd look on his face. Almost caring. "He begged for weeks for me to take him to you."

"Get him out." Virinia said, her voice cold. Both Spiflyth and Esperanza picked up on her mood, and while Spif made to eat him, Esperanza started crying, waving her clenched fists in the air and kicking out with her tiny feet.

"Please, 'Nia?" The man said, walking slowly towards the child who had his nose and ears.

"Out!" Virinia said shrilly, pointing towards the door as she hugged her baby tight to her. "I don't ever want you here again. Get out!"

"She's my daughter, too." The man growled, and Virinia almost cringed and fell back, but instead stood up tall and picked up a heavy stick she kept by her bed to reacho out and rock Esperanza's cradle. Weilding it, hefting it, she looked at him with a dare in her eyes for him to step closer. He seemed to sense that and frowned.

"Now Virinia, I know we didn't end on the best of notes..."

"So help me, if you don't get out of my sight and away from me and my daughter, I'll let Spiflyth eat you!" Virinia screamed, waving the club as she felt a tear run down her cheek. The man in the door saw it as well and crossed the room in three strides to stand between the man and Virinia.

"Maybe you should go." He said softly, shielding Virinia from his sight.

"Fine." He snapped, stepping back and glaring at Virinia and Spiflyth. "Keep the little whelp for all I care. I wish the two of you a miserable, short life."

Virinia let out a cry and started to sink to her knees, but strong arms gently took her by the arms and pulled her to a strong, warm, unyeilding chest. Shifting Esperanza, Virinia allowed herself to be wrapped in a hug and cried until she felt empty.

"How could you bring him here?" She finally asked with a sniffle. "And what's your name?"

He is Wyhatt, rider of blue Theoth, and he felt sorry for him and wanted to see you. Spiflyth said quickly, and Virinia blessed her three times over.

"Maybe you should leave as well." She said, very softly. Wyhatt still had his arms around her, and she felt them tighten protectively.

"I never would have brought him if I'd have known how he was going to react." He said softly, and Virinia believed him. "Here," he suddenly said with a smile, pushing her away a little, "give me that baby and get into that bed."

"What?" Virinia said with a frown, finding her arms devoid of her baby and herself being covered with warm blankets. The last thing she remembered was a feather-soft kiss on her lips, and the creak of the rocking chair, a deep humming resounding through the room.

Virinia couldn't get his blue eyes out of her mind, even as she sat in class listening to the teacher drone on about flights and the resulting acts. Unlike everyone else, her cheeks didn't turn a flaming red. At least, until she thought of what it would be like if Wyhatt and Theoth caught them.

"Virinia?" Someone asked, and she jerked her attention back to the present day.

"What?" She asked, and the few people around her snickered. Her cheeks turned red then, and Spiflyth rolled her eyes as she and her siblings talked about their mind-wandering bonds.

They were asking about how you know when your dragon is getting ready to fly. Spiflyth offered, and Virinia sighed and rolled her eyes at the white green dragoness. She would not stick out her tongue.

"They start attracting more attention than usual, become flirtatious and or violent, and are more than happy to voice their opinions about anyone and everyone." She said quickly, noting in her head that she had left out about a million other signs. Like the glowing hides, or sly remarks about males their bonds had crushes on...

"..all for today. See you all bright and early tomorrow." The instructor was saying, and Virinia grabbed her things and ran. Esperanza, at six months, was started to crawl, and smiled and clapped her hands whenever she saw her mother. Wanting to get to her as soon as possible, Virinia wasn't really watching where she was going until she ran into one of her classmates.

"Cecar! Sorry..." she started, but Cecar waved her apology away. She was well-suited for the white brown she'd bonded, Virinia noted. Both were...solid, down to earth, and tempermental.

"I was listening to you talking in class and couldn't help but notice that your Spiflyth is showing half the signs. Aren't you gonna sign her up for a flight?" Cecar asked, and Virinia couldn't help but laugh. Of course, she wouldn't know, being bonded to a male and all. She thought, and Spiflyth agreed, eyeing the white brown uncertainly.

"I'm sorry, it's just that she's naturally like that." Virinia said with a smile, and Cecar's face went red. "Don't feel bad, you're not the first to notice."

"I'm sorry." Cecar whispered, and Virinia smiled and shook her head.

"Don't worry about it."

When nothing more was said, Virinia excused herself and rushed to the nursery, ready to scoop up her curly-headed child...and finding no one in her crib.

"'Anza?" Virinia called, dropping to her knees and looking around the room.

"As much as I love the sight, you don't have to look for her that hard." A deep voice said with behind her, and Virinia scurried to her feet and swallowed hard when she saw Esperanza giggling happily in Wyhatt's arms, clapping her hands when Virinia finally forced a smile on her face.

"What are you doing here?" She asked carefully, knowing full well how busy he was in his fleet back home.

Whoops! Spiflyth suddenly chimed, and Virinia's face went blank as she waited for the rest. They transferred here. To be closer to us.

Virinia sat down very hard on her chair and stared alternately at Wyhatt and Spiflyth, who was happily basking with Theoth. The only thing she could think of was Oh no. Spiflyth just laughed.
