VIBRATING AND RECIPROCATING TOOLS

For faster or lazier work, several non-rotary tools produce quasi-linear, orbital or stroked movements. Power sources are usually vibrators or rotating cams driven by AC or DC actuators or motors. In addition to those found in saber saws and pad sanders, some resemble rotary tools and replace them, where a linear stoke is preferable in freehand work. Some multi-purpose tools have variegated sets of attachments. Engravers are simple, limited examples with very short strokes.

With some adaptation, a few of the sanders or saws may be extended to similar use. But most are harder to manipulate.

NOTE: Abrasive ( diamond) files should be used. Toothed, metal versions will dull rapidly from contact on back stroke.

Intended to be an extended-use engraver, the Burgess Vibro-Tool is an old design, which chucks engravers, chisels, blades and stones. Unfortunately the older chuck is odd sized, requiring a bushing adapter for alien bits. Reputedly the newer version has a 1/8" chuck. The stroke length is adjustable/ by a spring loaded thumbscrew. With careful adjustment and a chisel blade, unwanted detail can be quickly removed from plastic or metal surfaces. In spite of its awkward appearance, the unit balances very well in the crook of the hand with excellent control. The stroke can be set very short for fine work and engraving.

Available in AC or battery powered versions, the Electro-File has a longer fixed stroke length and is more robust. The chuck holds saw and knife blades, jeweler's files, wire brushes, sanding paddles or almost anything with about a1/16" or 1/8" shank. The stroke is a little long for delicate work, but is excellent for larger, rougher cases.

AC ELECTRO-FILE

Possibly overlooked, old electric toothbrushes make excellent power scrubbers. Inexpensive battery versions are readily available. Their reciprocating driver may produce linear, rotary or both actions and their speed produces some decavitation. They are water resistant and impervious to most common cleaning chemicals; however after use, they should be rinsed thoroughly to avoid residue caking.
