The original KMT power trucks had two flaws in which only 2 of the 3 axles were geared and the nylon axle gears often split. NWSL developed replacement gear sets, 2 axle 100-6 and 3 axle 101-6 to correct problem. The middle axle is easily converted, using the latter, during replacement. However due to the length of the shafts, extreme care must be exercised while pressing to prevent bending. I found out the hard way. Truing a bent shaft is almost impossible. Replacement is the best solution. Both the housing and cover plate must be relieved to clear new center gears. > ![]() ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. Bottom view of gear box + cover plate w/ milled slot to clear gear. Even on a 34" R test track, trucks shorted on ladder mounts. Almost all blobs of solder must be removed and trimmed back to clear. Overall performance appears to be slightly improved through frogs with a single unit, but with weighted A-B-A operation it is difficult to justify the center gears. BACK TO EXAMPLES |
