Around 1960 Penn-Line introduced a 10% shortened PRR GG-1, which except for shorter trucks, driver wheel base and shell, was an excellent replica. The original used unsightly screws to hold driver side frames to gearbox. Later a one piece casting eliminated the screws. Still later the castings were duplicated in plastic with a brass plate sandwitched between fo pickup. When Bob Faust died Gordon Varney bought the tooling and produced the plastic version for a few years. Following this a Hong Kong copy was introduced for sevral years. Finally Bowser bought the tooling from the Varney liquidation. Due to a lack of pantographs, only a few were produced. All other parts have been available. With several full length GG-1's on the roster, I decided to develop a fictitous GG-2 freighter, similar to the DD-2. Slower speed was indicated, requiring new gearing. During the process the screwed on side frames were eliminated on a 1962 version, while the plastic box was repaced on another. After some calculations and a search, NWSL module 3 worms and wheels were found to be a close fit. The change from 13:1 to 24:1 ratio reduced the speed to .625 % of the original. ![]() Note: Adjust brightness and contrast for optimum viewing. ![]() |
