Damned By Love

By Aymi Ylagan

What's it like to be a vampire? What's it like to be a vampire and live with the living? What's it like to be the king in a world of corpses? What's it like to be damned by love?

Surreal questions answered by the latest flick,"Queen of the Damned". Produced by Warner Bros. It all started with the awakening of Lestat(Stuart Townsend)after a couple of hundred years. He woke with a vision to change the conventional notion of what a vampire is. He wanted vampires to be out in the open, fear no one and practically live with the living. With his love for music, he started up a band that played songs like the "Redeemer" to express his pains and made it a way for summoning his fellow vampires. In his quest for power, he called the attention not only of vampires who wanted to kill him because of his insane proposition, but also the dreadful mother of all vampires, Akasha(Aaliyah) who only takes pleasure in killing life-both mortal and immortal.

As her wrath is known to all vampires, Marius(), Lestat's mentor came back to warn Lestat off the danger of bringing Acacia to the present world. While a hunted girl named Jesse, born from a vampire family always wanted to know what it is like to be like her vampire aunt. In her search for answers, she joined a group who studies paranormal incidents, the Talamasca. With Lestat's exposure to the real world, she took the guts to willingly asked Lestat to turn her immortal.

No one wanted to join Akasha's kingdom of corpses and so the vampire community all tried to kill her. Even Lestat realized the horror he has done whan Acacia ordered him to kill Jessie. He hesitated, and with his affection for the girl, he then wanted Acacia go back where she belongs. They succeeded and the traditional set up of the living and the undead remains.

As much as this film would want to scare the hell out of me, I feel that it has done more that make me shiver and drop my jaws. It made me realize two points. One is that people will never be contented. Both living and immortal. As long as there exist a constant wanting for more than what they already have, the yearning will never stop and happiness can never be achieved. Lestat is a vampire who wanted no more seclusion from the mortals. He wanted to be able to deliver his power out in the open. Acacia wanted nothing more but to kill life and bring hell on earth. She wanted power only for her chosen king and herself. Regardless if it meant having a kingdom of corpses. While Jesse wanted to know more from the world of her vampire family. She looked for answers to the point that she wanted to be a vampire herself.

These only states that while vampires longed for frailty, having a short life and a heart just because they're bored, tired and burdened by the fact that the curse to live in seclusion from the rest of the world will always be there, here comes the mortals who feel just the same an yearn for an escape to reality.

Another point that was indeed a surprise was that after everythings been said and done, it all boils down to love. Whoever or whatever you are, with or without a heart, living or undead, when you feel the compassion towards another entity is realized---you will begin to think twice about doing anything. You will have a change of heart be it from destroying humanity or the immortal community. Or even by just saying the 3-letter word.

Jesse got Lestat at hello. Her wanting for immortality made Lestat remember his human side. More than anything else, she wanted to be with him regardless if it meant giving up the one thing every vampire wants---that is sight of the morning sun.

With this, we can now see that everything is indeed possible Fear, rejection and power and all the others can be and will be damned by love.
