Ice Scandal Ends In Two Golds By Betsy T. Arvesu, Desiree May C. Diangson, and Nicole Kathleen T. Tigno
Canadian couple Jamie Sale and David Pelletier with co-champions Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia were proclaimed gold medalists in the Winter Olympics.
Sale and Berezhnaya climbed the medals podium hand-in-hand to the ovation of a packed arena, while Pelletier and Sikharulidze chatted like old friends. The champions' emotional picture has created an olympic drama linked with both fame and fury.
February 11 was a different story. When the winners were announced last Monday, Pelletier burried his hands in his heads. His wife, Sale cried.
The boos that rained down Salt Lake City's rink after the Russians were awarded the gold last Monday did not sit well on the conscience of at least one of the five judges who voted against Canada's spectacular performance.
One of the judges Marie-Reine Le Gougne from France admitted she was pressured by the French Federation to vote in favor of Russia.
After the announcement, Mark Lund, figure skating critic said the Russian pair deserved the silver and tried to explain the controversial 5-4 vote as a form of "political maneuvering."
Russia has held a gold streak in figure skating since 1964. Figure dancing however, is not Russian territory. This year, Russian figure dancers are projected only to win a bronze but France is projected to bag the gold.
But no Russian involvement in the "pressure" has so far been mentioned. On the other hand the French federation's side denies allegedly pressuring Le Gougne. Meanwhile investigations are still on going.
Sale said she hopes the investigation goes even further.
"Justice was made," Pelletier said in relation to the duplicate gold awarded. "It's a good feeling."
"For the future of our sport this has to be fixed," Sale said. "The truth still has to come out."
