In short, the plot is about a mafia boss (De Niro) who realises that he needs a psychiatrist (Billy Crystal) to help him get over his panic attacks. With only me (bush) and Neil having watched this it may not have been a fair test because in our opinion any film with Robert De Niro in it should automatically start at about 6/10 (apart from mistress. Keep well away from this one). However the film was good enough to rate highly by anyone's standards. It's more a film about a gangster than a gangster film if you know what I mean that gets the balance between the comedy and the darker side of it just right so as not to be a crappy spoof like Mafia and not as intense as a Goodfellas. There are excellent performances from De Niro who shows that he is just as adept at comedy as everything else as he proved years ago in films like New York, New York and and Billy Crystal who supports De Niro excellently and plays second fiddle to him for most of the movie until he lets rip with an improvised speech in the funniest scene at the meeting towards the end. If you like gangster films you'll get the references and see all the Italian-American actors and will no doubt be thinking where you've seen them before (Joe Viterelli who plays Jelly has probably been in every gangster film since the 20's) but the film is good enough to appeal to everyone. |
