The Air Training
Corps is a youth organisation aimed at encouraging a practical interest
in aviation, adventure and sport, providing training which will
be useful in any walk of life and developing leaders and good citizens.
Many facilities are provided by the Royal Air Force, but there is
no pressure to join the service. Those who do, invariably
find the ATC gives them a decided advantage
Most squadrons carry out regular training on two evenings a week
and run a number of activities at other times convenient for their
cadets. Squadrons are run by Officers who are commissioned
in the Training Branch of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
They are assisted by adult civilian instructors and squadron chaplains.
All are volunteers.
Whether or not young people are already in a youth organisation,
if they are interested in aircraft and flying, gliding, overseas
travel, sport and expeditions they should join the Air Training
Corps. It offers a wide range of exciting activities and the
chance to learn new subjects and make new friends.
The age limits for joining the ATC are from 13 to 18 and cadets
can stay on until they reach 20. After completing a period
of basic training cadets are enrolled and free RAF uniform is issued.
