Project Mercury was started in 1958 A.D. It was the first stage of NASA and it's main goal was to get a man into space, and then get him to orbit the earth. Alan Shepard was able to accomlish the first goal and became the first American into space in 1962. John Glen became the first man to orbit the earth in 1963, he orbited the earth 3 times. The MErcury Project was set as a stepping stone for NASA, and it has led to things such as a man on the moon, and the events up to today...
