The Maps

The Maps - from El Arish (Sinai and Aust) to Damascus

The top-right map is from Official War Records and shows the ALH (Australian Light Horse) all over Damascus on the eve of their liberation of the city on October 1, '1918. (Note: 4th and 5th Cav. Divisions were made up mostly of Indians, who were rather green, having arrived only in the last couple of months of the campaign.)

The bottom-right map is from Lawrence’s book, and shows the major cities captured in the campaign, including El Arish on December 21, '1916.

When, John Hogan (an ancestor of the author), returned to Australia, he founded and named a new settlement in north Queensland, El Arish, in honour of his experiences in the War. See map bottom-left (El Arish is near Tully and Mission Beach, and south of Innisfail in N. E. Australia).

This would be an ideal place for a special monument and ceremony commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of the Holy Land spearheaded by Australians.
