Today’s
only road to reach the Province of Abra, from Narvacan in Ilocos sur to
Pidigan and Bangued in Abra, cuts through a tunnel under the crests
of the western Ilocos Range.
Abra considers Gabriela Silang its own heroine, honoring her with an imposing equestrian statue seen left of the tunnel in a minipark in her honor built in 1998, the Philippine Centenial Year. Gabriela Silang, nee Cariño, was born in Candon, in the costal plains of today's province of Ilocos Sur. He married Diego Silang, a revolutionary who rebelled against Spain in the XVIII century. When her husband was defeated and killed, she took refuge in her paternal uncle’s house, the Cariños' ancestral home in Tayum, province of Abra. More details, photos and a video
in Gabriela
Silang Park.
