PANTOMIMES

Castle Hall Sunday School Pantomimes

Panto time was a favourite, but busy, time at Castle Hall school. In the run up to the first performance, which was traditionally on
Boxing Day, the school would be a hive of activity almost every night. Principals would be learning their lines in one room whilst in another room the chorus lines would be busy rehearsing their song and dance routines.

The men of the church would be busy preparing the stage, sorting out the electrics and other technical necessities and also building and painting the scenery. Many cries of " watch that paint " or " mind that ladder " could be heard echoing throughout the building.

In the sewing room at the far end of the canteen, the wardrobe mistresses May Redford and Carrie Hadfield - not forgetting their
band of busy helpers -would be busy sorting out old costumes and making new ones. When it was time for trying on, woe betide anyone who dared moved - you either got a crack or a pin stuck in you.

Castle Hall had a reputation for producing excellent pantomimes and a lot of the credit must go to these unseen heroes. Of course it would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of the performers - but what a buzz it gave us!

There were some things that were true of all the pantomimes performed at Castle Hall. One was " the smell of the grease paint ".
All the performers would be required to line up in the Head Teacher's office to have their make-up applied, everyone would be
talking at once excited that the time had finally come.
The atmosphere in the dressing rooms would be electric, not only were we excited but also very nervous.
It was not unknown for the tears to flow.

On the last night gifts would be received for having given a good performance. And the tears would flow again.
