March/April 2006

Happy Spring to our members.
It's a great time to come and dance.

The dance studio has been furry busy and gonna get busier. In April we are beginning Country and Line Dancing classes! They'll be lotsa fun and will be scheduled every Friday morning. Most kitties are good line dancers but may need a little practice in their counting. That's why mew will see the numbers on the studio wall in there. If mew would like to start in Country or any additional dance classes or attend Dance Nights, just check our schedule here. To apply fur membership in the dance studio, just send us an email here. Memfurs needn't take classes to use the studio or attend dance nights unless they want to. Tell your furriends about the studio, and encourage them to join, too. We luff to get new memfurs.

Last monff our spotlight was on our jaaaazzzy Jazz Dance classes. We all had a great time in class and got some good class pictures, both in practice and dress rehearsals fur an all-studio purrformance. Then we presented our All That Jazz Review onstage. Wasn't that a great show! Mew will find the Jazz pictures right here and linked again at the end of the newsletter.

Spring has sprung; do we feel springy? How about energetic? Yes? Good! Because this time we are purrparing to spotlight the wonderfur Tap dancing classes. We've had sefural of them going efury Tuesday, and some kitties are staying fur two cuz they're hafing so much fun in there! It's bouncey mewsic and a whole lotta tappity-tapping going on. (Uh.... fur those of mew who asked about earplugs, see below.) And these tap dancers are really good! So it's time fur class pictures in there. We will be sending a request to memfurs with specifics for pictures soon, so be watching!

We're glad to see lots of memfurs coming to our Shoppe, and finding things they need there. We did pay attention when sefural of mew asked about earplugs and ordered lotsa those. There was a big run on dem last Tuesday! Please let us know if mew would like us to order anything else.

Now fur our regular article about dance needs fur kitties:

Dance Pance
by Phelicity

One of the best things to haff fur dance practice is a comfy pair of dance pance ...er, pants. Granted, the girls haff some advantage, cuz we can wear liddle dresses fur practice and purrforming but the boys always (we hope) wear (dey better be!) pants. But in class I use dance pants a lot.

Some dance pants fit furry close, especially the leotards type, and I do mean furry. But all pants can present problems fur kitties, and we all know why. It's probably safe to say that if mew can't get your furs tucked into dem, the pants won't do, but our tails are our main concern. Some of us tuck in our tails, some don't, and some of us wiff fluffy bushy tails couldn't if we tried. Belief me. Couldn't! I know!

So loose-fitting dance pants are often a better choice fur us. Not only are dey more roomy to allow fur movement, but to allow fur tails! On the offur paw, we are purroud of our beautifur tails and dey help us keep our exquisite grace and balance as kitties. This is why elastic at the top is best. It gives us... ummm, alternatives fur where ... er, ... how ... uh, ..what to do wiff our tails.

Now, once we pick out the purrfect pair, how do we get dem dance pants on? I know some of mew girls wondered this, cuz mew wasn't as used to dem as boys (I hope) was. Well, dey's easier dan blue jeans, I can tell mew that. Belief me! Some kitties gotta wear blue jeans backwards cuz ... nefur mind. What mew do is sit comfurbly on the bench in the dressing room and put one leg in, den the offur leg in, poke out your feets, stand up, pull dem up an jiggle. Keep your toenails drawn in. A kitty hopping around wif her toenail caught in her dance pants is not a graceful kitty.

That's all there is to it! So let's get our dance pance on and dants! er, ...dance!

Phelicity now reviews our newest dance DVD, which is available in the shoppe.

Chicago (and all that jazz!)

The movie called Chicago is really about "all that jazz". It's a great musical, with the most energetic and fun dancing mew will efur see. Jazz dancing, because the story is set in Chicago in the roaring twenties. Furst let me warn, this is not a movie fur kittens, it's fur grownup cats. The stars of the movie are Velma, a jazz-dancing chorus girl who wants to be more than that, and Roxie, a housewife who wants to be a chorus girl. The opening performance of All That Jazz by Velma is terrific. If that's all mew saw, mew would go away dancing and singing. The movie is sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes plain hard to believe, but it's full of wonderfur dancing, in spite of the serious story.

Mew see, Velma and Roxie are soon both in jail charged with murder, cuz dey both shot a man who done dem wrong. Both girls get a lawyer named Billy, who believes he can get them off with a lot of razzle-dazzle and making them famous to get them sympathy. The trouble is, efury new girl that comes along charged wif murder, Billy is off doing razzle-dazzle fur that one. He's not furry loyal. Velma and Roxie are natural celebrities though, as they take things into their own hands, and Billy does come through fur dem in the end. He even does some purrty good tap dancing. I wouldn't advise copying anything at all in this movie except the rousing dancing! And it's full of that!

One character I liked was Roxie's poor schlump husband, who did a number called "Mr. Cellophane." He just did a liddle soft-shoe shuffle to that great rhythm, but that's jazz, too. I went away singing that song fur weeks, when I wasn't singing "All That Jazz". The songs are all memorable and the dancing is fantastic! If we can learn to dance jazz half that well, we'll really be somethin! Oh, the end of the movie? It's Velma and Roxie performing together, mew will luff it! The whole thing has been called a stagy song and dance review. It's great entertainment, and I recommend it highly.
