Hanwei and FanG Lao Shi

There can only be one Fang Lao Shi

There can only be one Chen Hanwei

Chen Hanwei = Fang Lao Shi

WINNING FORMULA

The role helped him win the Most Popular Actor Award though it didn't earn him  the Best Actor Award.

No actor will ever be able to bring Fang Lao Shi to life like the way he did. Hanwei seems the embodiment of all qualities needed for the creation of a charismatic role like Fang Lao Shi:

Looks

Finely-sculptured face, dark determined brows, eyes exuding intelligence, kindness and love.  “Qi zhi (unique aura)+ "shu juan wei" (scholastic air)+ "ling qi pi ren" (inner glow). All  total up to give him that irresistible charm and  look of Fang Lao Shi.

Image

Like Jonathan Seagull, Fang Lao Shi isn't the main-stream goody, goody guy. Hanwei's nice guy look has a rebelliousness about him enhanced by his long hair that is appealing.

Interest and personality

Hanwei loves teaching and counseling besides acting and designing. In an interview with Zaobao, he revealed that he taught drama part-time in school before joining TCS and enjoyed that kind of "adoration" by students.

Among his loyal fans are students from Guangyang Secondary School where the show was filmed. A student recalled that Hanwei often took his meals with students at the school canteen while filming.

Background

Like Fang Lao Shi, he's an outstanding student in his school days. The only difference though is their family background - Fang Lao Shi comes  from a broken family, unlike Hanwei. But then the fact that Hanwei's father is a teacher  probably helps.

Seagull  spirit

Hanwei's difficult career path read like the story of the Seagull too. Whilst most of his contemporaries and those who joined after him were "fed with" plum roles and big publicity right from the day they became artistes,  Hanwei had to perfect his acting skills quietly by taking on many minor roles. No  actor could express the Seagull spirit better than him.

Acting skills

With all his advantages, this role may still flop without good, natural acting skills. As the saying goes "Hao ren nan zuo" (difficult to be a good guy) so it is with acting a good guy role. Under-acting will make this role boring, overacting will make it  fake. Hanwei gave the right touch to this role.

On one Teacher's Day, Lianhe Zaobao described Hanwei as the

'''Branded Fang Lao Shi' - an  image deeply seated in audience hearts.

rtvtimes predicted Hanwei wouldn't win Best Actor Award in 1996 with following comments:

Winning secret:

His appearance and inner aura matches Fang Lao Shi totally without a  fault.

Lurking destroyer:

Not much changes in characterisation. Unable to see Hanwei's strength.

P/S :Judges seem to prefer actors that act dramatically, regrettably discounting those who act natural, even if they could create a deeper impression in audience's minds and hearts.

Hanwei on Fang Lao Shi and Morning Express

Though grateful for the success brought by this role, Hanwei hoped to break out from the mould of Fang Lao Shi.  The seagull in him is'nt happy with just finding popularity.

The Drama Festival gave him a chance to talk about the show again. In an interview with " 8 Days", he joked that what he remembered most about the show was how heavy the gals were. Remember he had to carry and piggy-back  Fann and Ann many times?

But at  the closing of the show on TV he took on a serious note saying that if he had to act Fang Lao Shi again, he would want to bring his students out to society where they will take real knocks and learn the spirit of the seagull.

After 2 years break from acting, Hanwei took on some different roles such as comedic, geek and ugly ones with aplomb. In his next show "Chun Dao Ren Jian" he's going to make audience hate him...

But we know he'll be always be our Fang Lao Shi...
