--- Changing Michigan Law ---

Convincing our legislators that, the Sex Offender Registry (SOR) and/or Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC), laws should be changed first requires an understanding of "How a Bill Becomes Law."

Within that process are steps where advocates and others are permitted to appear before committees or legislators that are holding public hearings or gathering information about a bill. Our purpose in attendance is to present justification, to support or oppose, a bill under consideration.

It is important to also learn How Legislative Committees Work and how you can make an impact on legislation. Citizens are encouraged to write to committee members and give testimony at committee meetings when possible. It is VERY important to keep any communication diplomatic, short and to the point!

During our appearances we present opinion and logic automatically, however, committees and legislators prefer to have proof to support our opinion and logic statements. That is where input from citizens, that are or would be affected, by the bill is critical.

Michigan House of Representatives
Michigan Senate
Accordingly we have developed what we call a "Case Profile" for citizens to complete and forward to us beforehand. These Case Profiles would be presented, excepting where anonymity was requested, and there it would be presented without a name. i.e., John or Jane Doe Citizen.

The questionnaire is quite easy to complete, asking general questions about your current circumstances and past convictions. The questionnaire also asks you to describe any current negative affects you are experiencing resulting from, registration or community notification, laws that affect you today.

The case profiles we use will be determined by the legislation we are working on and the points we are trying to make. Please share your story with us. Personal information will ONLY be used with your permission and only with respect to Michigan Legislation!
