Cleve
and Nell Thompson are medical missionaries of the Church of God in
Cleveland, TN. and are seconded to The Salvation Army
Cleve
was a general surgeon and Nell was a nurse in Waycross, Georgia for
20 years before "retiring" early to become full time
medical missionaries in 1994. They have spent 3 years in
Kijabe, Kenya and 2 years in Kiwoko, Uganda. Now, they hope to go to
Zimbabwe if Cleve can get a medical license and things don't get more
violent there.
The
Thompsons have a two fold ministry:
-
Providing
surgical care for the poor in areas that have no access
to surgical care. During the last 5 years "on the
field" over 6,000 procedures have been done by this "bush surgeon".
-
Evangelism
through crusades
-
Crusades
include door to door evangelism (a misnomer when most huts
have no doors), open air preaching and the showing of videos such as
the Jesus video.
-
Crusades
have been very effective in strengthening the local churches.
There have been over 800 persons who have made commitments during
these crusades.
-
Many
of the national staff members of the hospitals
participated. Usually 50 of the staff would go out. This
not only constituted a great evangelism team but brought the national
and mission staff closer together.
-
The
local church members participated in the evangelism and
follow-up of converts and most church's membership grew.
