Zimbabwe, A Troubled LandThe independent nation of Zimbabwe, formerly the British Colony of Southern Rhodesia is a landlocked country in southern Africa bordered by Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zambia. It is well-watered savannah or highland plain and is rich in minerals. In 1965 the colony's white minority, which rejected British insistence on black majority rule as a requirement for independence, unilaterally declared Rhodesia independent. International pressure and a prolonged civil war forced Rhodesia's white-dominated government to accept a limited form of black majority rule in 1979. In 1980, Zimbabwe finally gained full legal independence under black majority rule After independence, many of the white settlers stayed and continued to farm the rich land and blacks and whites lived in harmony. However, there has been increasing turmoil between those settlers and what the media calls squatters over "land reform". The people at Howard Hospital however say that the area around the hospital has been quiet and activities have been able to continue uninterrupted. Hyperinflation, food shortages (farmers are afraid to plant) and even threats to hospitals and personnel have been experienced. Only prayer and "spiritual warfare" is going to change this climate of violence and turmoil.
