Chase Championships, New York (Nov. 16-22)
Amanda was beaten in the first round of the Chase Championships by sixth seed, Mary Pierce. She won only 29 points in the match, with her only game coming as a break of serve at 4-0 in the first set. Amanda later commented that "She started off great and I never even got a chance to get anywhere close to the match. I didn't feel like I was playing badly. I am hitting the ball great at the moment... I never was given a chance." Mary's comments after the match were; "I just had a good day. All my shots worked for me, basically. I just tried to stay concentrated because, against someone like Amanda, if you give her a chance, then she gets back into the match. Then it can become a very tough match."
Singles:
1st Rd: Amanda Coetzer lt. Mary Pierce, 1-6, 0-6
Amanda was defeated in the quarter-finals of Philadelphia in a tight three set match by the sixth seed, Nathalie Tauziat. Amanda was defeated in the quarter-finals of the Swisscom Challenge by the new world number one, Lindsay Davenport. In the first set, Davenport raced to a three-love lead, but Amanda fought back to level the score at three-all. However Coetzer couldn't capitalise on three game points in the next game, and from then on, the world number one simply moved into another gear. Amanda won only one more game when she broke Davenport's servce late in the second set, but it was too little to avoid the inevitable defeat. In doubles, Amanda and partner, Anna Kournikova were beaten in three sets by Venus and Serena Williams.

Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Filderstadt (Oct 5-11)
Amanda was beaten in straight sets, in the first round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after having the misfortune of drawing Mary Pierce, who is ranked only one place below her. Amanda is only the second player in WTA history to be ranked in the top ten but be unseeded in a tournament. Pierce broke Coetzer's serve in the fourth game of the first set, and with the fast indoor conditions suiting Mary's style of play, Amanda's defeat was inevitable, though she did try to break back in the seventh game, forcing three deuces and making several winning passes.
Singles:

Amanda has suffered a shock loss in the second round in Tokyo, to veteran player, Amy Frazier. She did not lose a game in the first set, where Frazier described her as playing 'perfect tennis.' However, the turning point came in the seventh game of the second, where she was broken by Frazier. From then on, the American shut down Coetzer in the rest of the second set and took the match.
In doubles, Amanda and partner Anke Huber also lost, to the fourth seeds Anna Kournikova and Monica Seles.

US Open, (Aug 31-Sept 13)
Amanda was beaten in the quarter-finals of the US Open by the second seed, Lindsay Davenport. From the beginning, Amanda appeared to have been unsettled by the wind that swirled around the big stadium, and she quickly ceded the first set without winning a game. She held in the first game of the second, before the match was interrupted again by rain. The rain delay seemed to help Amanda more, as she picked up her level of play, to give the second seeded American a decent match in the second set. Amanda even broke Lindsay once, to level at 4-all but she was unable to hold her own serve in the next game. Coetzer had her chances to break back on Davenport's serve, but Davenport finally defeated Amanda on her fifth match point. After the match, Amanda said "...the way she hits the ball is intimidating. She hits really hard and deep. Points are over pretty quickly. You know, you often feel like you don't really have a say in what's going to happen at the end of the point." Despite her loss, Amanda could draw several positives from this tournament; it was her best showing in six Grand Slam tournaments, she defeated seventh seeded Conchita Martinez for only the second time in her career and from the second set, she was in with a chance against Davenport, the eventual US Open champion.

Along with Jana Novotna and Lindsay Davenport, Amanda was a victim of Steffi Graf at New Haven, in her first tournament win since her comeback from injury. In their quarter-final match, it was Amanda who broke first at 3-2 in the first set, but this only served to spur Steffi to play better. From then on, she broke Coetzer five times in a row. Later, Steffi accounted for the easy win, by saying that it was obvious that Amanda wasn't at her best, while Amanda had nothing but praise and good wishes for her opponent. Earlier in the tournament, Coetzer also had one of her best wins in awhile, with her second round comeback victory over Anna Kournikova.
Singles:

Amanda was beaten in the third round of the du Maurier Open by doubles partner Anke Huber. Coetzer had her chances to win both sets - she was up a break at 5-3 in the first and had three set points in the tie-break of the second - but Anke was able to lift her game at crucial moments, and Amanda inexplicably lost her way when she was ahead.

Amanda was upset in the quarter-finals of the Boston Cup by seventh-seeded Barbara Schett. After coming back from set point down to win the first set, the turning point of the match was at 2-2 in the second, when Coetzer double-faulted after six deuces to hand Schett the break of serve. Amanda won only three more games after that, and said herself "...I didn't feel very energetic or motivated at that point, and I don't often feel like that. It was very hard for me not to get through that game, and it was the turning point."

Amanda was upset in the second round of Wimbledon by crafty Japanese player, Naoko Sawamatsu. Coetzer began promisingly by winning the first set, but her serve was a problem throughout the whole match and she committed six double faults. Sawamatsu played superlatively, becoming more agressive in the final two sets and Amanda succumbed to a 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 defeat. Coetzer's '98 Wimbledon campaign ended when she and partner Sandrine Testud lost in two close sets in the third round of the doubles tournament against Silvia Farina and Laura Montalvo.

Amanda's bid to recapture her run of last year at Roland Garros, was upended in the first round by dangerous Swiss player, Patty Schnyder. Schnyder has been in good form in the weeks leading up to the French Open - having won her third title of the year in Madrid last week - whereas Coetzer's results have been indifferent as she has been hampered by a virus since her last trip to South Africa. However, the match was still tight, with Schnyder winning only four more points than Coetzer. Amanda also had more chances to break than her opponent. In the first set, Schnyder raced to a four-love lead; Coetzer then found her game to almost level at 4-5 before Patty finished off the set. In the second, both players had trouble holding serve but Coetzer was the steadier to take the set 6-3. Amanda then jumped to a 3-1 lead in the final set, before Schnyder won three games in a row. Coetzer won the next two games and held three match points at 5-4, but Schnyder was the stronger in snatching an 8-6 victory in the third set.

Amanda was bundled out in the semi-finals of the Bausch and Lomb Championships to sixth-seeded Conchita Martinez. Martinez led 4-0 in the first set, but Amanda fought back to trail 4-5, only to lose her serve. In the second set, she won merely five points. "The matches I remember it seems to be the same match over and over and over again with Conchita every time I play her," Coetzer said. "We play a tight first set and then it's like I run out of answers in the second set... I got a little bit down because I lost opportunities."

Amanda wins the Family Circle Cup!!!
Amanda won the biggest title of her career and her first Tier I at her adopted hometown of Hilton Head. She defeated Irina Spirlea in straight sets by frustrating the Romanian due to her steadiness and ability to counter the forehands and drop shots that Spirlea threw at her. Although Amanda had a relatively easy draw, with Spirlea being the highest seed that she had to defeat, Coetzer had to face a myriad of other problems - a break-up with her long-time coach, her matches being continually delayed by rain, forcing her to play two matches in a day, twice during the week - and she contemplated not even playing the Family Circle Cup. Amanda said that not having any expectations may have been the secret to her win; '...I really didn't feel like I was playing my greatest tennis, so maybe that was the secret. I came in with no expectations. If I played badly, I wasn't that surprised by it. I just kind of tried to play the next point and just make the best out of the situation... I really had to pick one title that I'd really like to put behind my name, this would be the one.'
In other news, Amanda is no longer working with Gavin Hopper, her coach for the past three and a half years. The break-up happened during the Lipton tournament. Coetzer is currently working with South African Michael Dejongh ,whom she had been using in the past to supplement Hopper's work. Hopper is now working with Monica Seles.

Amanda was unfortunately bundled out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open by Lindsay Davenport in the singles, and with Anke Huber, lost to Davenport and Natasha Zvereva in the doubles. The fast 'SpuckTurf' surface, which Davenport called the fastest that they play on, didn't suit Coetzer's game. Lindsay has now defeated Amanda the last five times that they've played, and stretched to a 6-2 lifetime match record against her.

Amanda suffered yet another heart-breaking loss in Australia, this time in the fourth round of the Australian Open to the tenth-seeded German, Anke Huber. Coetzer appeared to have the match in hand, throughtout most of the match, until the final few games. She was leading a 6-2 and 4-1 in the second set, with Anke appearing unhappy with herself and making a lot of unforced errors. Amanda then started to play a little more conservatively and Anke went on a tear of six games. Amanda picked up her game once more, and again led 4-1 in the final set. But Anke got herself back into the match to lead 5-4 before both girls went another notch in their level of play, producing some brilliant shots and rallies, with the commentators calling it the best women's match of the tournament. At 5-5, Amanda was at 40-15 when she hit a wild unforced error on what appeared to be an easy forehand. From then on, Anke didn't lose another point and closed out the match on her first match point. Huber perhaps had an advantage in that she was serving first in the third set - there were several breaks of serve and it was likely that the match would be decided by one breaking the other's serve, than the winner holding their own. The match statistics didn't bring much good news for Amanda either - Coetzer hit merely 12 winners, whilst Huber hit 72 unforced errors and was still able to win.
Later on the same day, Coetzer teamed with Huber to lose their doubles match to Conchita Martinez and Patricia Tarabini, no doubt affected by their tough three-set match against one another.

Amanda lost a disappointing match to Natasha Zvereva in the second round of the adidas International on Wednesday. The Coetzer/Zvereva match was unbelievable to watch, one that left the television commentators speechless. The first and second sets were very tight, with just one service break coming from Coetzer in the second set. In the third set, Amanda rushed to a 3-0 lead, when Zvereva asked for the trainer. Apparently, she was having some trouble breathing, due to the heat and humidity on court, but in the post-match interview, Zvereva gave the reason that she was having some problems with water retention. When play resumed, Zvereva at one stage asked the umpire that if she was to default the match, would she have to forfeit her doubles - to be played later in the day against Coetzer/Huber - as well. When told that she would have to, Natasha continued to play, but it was obvious that she didn't want to be on court. Amanda went up to 5-2 and was two points from the match. At that stage, Zvereva, one of the most talented but frustrating, players on the tour, picked up her game with an ace and some amazing winners that just caught the line. According to the commentators, Amanda's amount of unforced errors also increased dramatically. Coetzer didn't look very happy either; she looked distracted and confused, possibly by Zvereva's second wind. Zvereva won five games in a row to take the third set, 7-5. Although the loss must have hurt her, Amanda still took the time to sign autographs for a crowd that was really behind her, before she left the court. Coetzer and Huber also lost their doubles match to Zvereva and Davenport, the top seeds in the tournament.

South Africa was unfortunately unable to advance to the final of the Hopman Cup on Friday afternoon. France completed a 3-0 sweep in both of the singles and doubles matches. Amanda lost to Pierce in straight sets. She actually hit more winners than Mary did, but made too many uncharacteristic unforced errors. In the mixed, neither team appeared too intent on winning - although Amanda played very solidly, Wayne wasn't as brilliant as he was in South Africa's past two live doubles matches. The French team's power and pace of shot enabled them to get through. Coetzer has been reportedly trying to flatten out her shots and to get more penetration on both her backhand and forehand which could explain her lacklustre form over the past week.
