Amanda was beaten in the first round of the Chase Championships by sixth seed, Mary Pierce. She won only 29 points in the match, with her only game coming as a break of serve at 4-0 in the first set. Amanda later commented that "She started off great and I never even got a chance to get anywhere close to the match. I didn't feel like I was playing badly. I am hitting the ball great at the moment... I never was given a chance." Mary's comments after the match were; "I just had a good day. All my shots worked for me, basically. I just tried to stay concentrated because, against someone like Amanda, if you give her a chance, then she gets back into the match. Then it can become a very tough match."

Amanda will be representing South Africa at the ITF sponsored Hopman Cup tournament for the eighth straight year. She is paired with Wayne Ferriera, and they are to be seeded fourth. South Africa is in the same group as the top seeds Spain, Australia and either Zimbabwe or France. Amanda will be guaranteed matches against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Jelena Dokic, and Carlos Moya and Mark Philippoussis in the mixed doubles.

Amanda was defeated in the quarter-finals of Philadelphia in a tight three set match by the sixth seed, Nathalie Tauziat. The turning point of the match came at 2-2 in the final set, where Tauziat gained the only service break in the third set. Amanda however, had her best win of the season earlier in the tournament, where she defeated world number four, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario for her first 1998 victory over a Top 5 player.
