ABS-CBN, 4 others to vie for PBA TV rights.
Broadcast giant ABS-CBN will make a bid for the broadcast rights to air the Philippine Basketball Association games, heating up the "bidding war" for one of the most lucrative TV programs in the country. PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino revealed yesterday that ABS-CBN, the country's largest network, is one of about four or five entities which have signified their intention to win the rights for the PBA games estimated to be worth over half a billion pesos a year. Vintage Enterprise has been the owner of the TV rights since 1982, but it's contract expires at the end of the year. Among those which have sent letters of intent to the PBA are the International Marketing Group, a potent marketing firm of international repute, and the GMA-owned Citynet 27.

ABS-CBN and Silverstar Communications, which according to Bernardino also signified their intention, are expected to submit written bids today along with Vintage. The Bulletin tried to contact ABS-CBN last night but failed to talk with any of its officials for confirmation. The network newsroom, however, said there is indeed a bid but it is up for the top management to come out with the final decision. "We already sent invitations as early as last December. The present contract will expire this year and, as per agreement with Vintage, the PBA will be opening the field to other parties," said Bernardino.

Bernardino said his office will first evaluate all applicants before forwarding them to the PBA television committee for another scrutiny. The qualifiers will then present their respective bids to the league Board of Governors for decision. "Board will set the guidelines and parameters to determine which company gets the TV rights. It will not be a sealed bidding but, of course, the offers of different parties will not be known to each other," Bernardino added.

"We are not after the money but more on the quantitative and qualitative factors for bringing the PBA action to more basketball fans." Meanwhile, 5-foot-8 College of Du Page in Chicago Fil-American player Vincent Calip yesterday beat the deadline for the submission of requirements for rookies to bring the total number of league hopefuls to 18. -EDGARD HILARIO
