Siegle fans disappointed. About a thousand people jampacked the Reyes Gym yesterday to see Andrew Siegle in his very first tune-up game, and most of them went home disappointed. Siegle did score 25 points in Mobiline's 106-89 rapping of amateur ballclub Stag Pale Pilsen. However, the 6-8 Fil-American was hardly the devastating center he is touted to be. This year's number one overall pick was virtually a non-factor on defense and seemed unable to snare those rebounds despite his towering frame. Worse, the former New Orleans U slotman committed an eye-popping 12 errors, certainly not a trait of a future superstar. Stag mentor Alfrancis Chua believes that Seigle has to do a lot of work regarding his upper and lower body strength if he intends to make it big in the pro-loop. "Kay Mark (Telan) lang na 20 years old lang, nahihirapan na siya (Siegle), ano pa kaya kung binabantayan siya ni Benjie (Paras) o kaya Noli Locsin? Mahihirapan siya," remarked Chua. Siegle, who just signed a five-year contract with Mobiline for an unspecified amount, reasoned out that his not so impressive performance came about with unfamiliarity with local players.
"I was a bit awkward," he said. "But I think I can improve, I
believe I'm a versatile player for my height, I just need time to
adjust." Mobiline mentor Norman Black gave his prized rookie a
passing mark. "I think he (Siegle) played a pretty good game,"
Black said. "I think he just have to work on his inside game, he
has a tendency to be off-balanced." -Noel Rodriguez
