It is still a getting- to-know-you game in the PBA All-Filipino
Cup as four ballclubs of similar win-loss records mix it up tonight
at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Opening up only the fourth twinbill of the First Conference are
Mobiline and Formula Shell at 5:15 p.m. while at 7:30 p.m. it will
be Sta. Lucia Realty against San Miguel Beer.
All four teams are sporting 1-1 slates like defending champion
Alaska Milk and Pop Cola with Gordon's Gin at its lonesome on
top of the standings at 2-0. Pure Foods Corned Beef is
languishing in the cellar following back-to- back setbacks.
And now, the important details.
The Cellulars and the Turbochargers are both coming off
morale-boosting victories and are expected to provide tonight's
"thrilla."
Mobiline just recently beat Pure Foods, 84-78, in a game where
a 20-point margin was almost not enough to ensure the victory.
But the way it recovered from what could had been a
monumental collapse hinted of a great promise from the league's
long- time doormat.
"I'm happy with the win, this being my first as coach of
Mobiline," said Norman Black who was visibly satisfied with the
way the Cellulars responded to pressure down the stretch.
Shell is still in high spirits after a remarkable comeback win from
20 points down against Sta. Lucia. Again starring for the team
are old reliables Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc with Jolly
Escobar providing able backup job.
San Miguel, on the other hand, is the latest victim of Gordon's
Gin which narrowly escaped with the win via the buzzer-beating
trey of Bal David.
Severely depleted due to injuries on starters Allan Caidic, Paul
Alvarez, Samboy Lim and Dong Polistico, the Beermen and
American coach Ron Jacobs can still pose some problems to the
unpredictable Realtors.
Jacobs, whose coaching job is continuously disputed by the
association of local coaches, has partially succeeded in giving
San Miguel the image of a contender with defense as its main
weapon.
On the contrary, coach Chot Reyes admitted that the Realtors,
powered by Jun Limpot, Dennis Espino, Gerald Esplana and
Romy dela Rosa, have yet to play as a team, lacking both
intensity and consistency.
