Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup playoffs require the highest level of play in hockey, each round
more grueling than the last. It is acknowledged by athletes from all sports that
the Cup is the hardest championship to win among all team sports.

History: One of the most sought after team trophies in all of sports.
The Stanley Cup, the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America,
was donated by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby, in
1893.
Lord Stanley purchased the trophy for 10 guineas ($50 at that time) for presentation to the
amateur hockey champions of Canada. Since 1910, when the National Hockey Association
took possession of the Stanley Cup, the trophy has been the symbol of professional hockey
supremacy. It has been competed for only by NHL teams since 1926 and has been under
the exclusive control of the NHL since 1946.

* Yearly standings are not listed in the above Stanley Cup link, since they are
easily available on the internet. The other professional leagues below list
all respective league champions with all-time yearly standings.

vs The World Features NHL against non-NHL teams.

If you know of any scores that are missing (and there are a ton) please e-mail any info on links
or material that could be researched regarding NHL vs non-NHL teams. All credits will be listed.

American Hockey League (AHL)

Calder Cup champions and AHL yearly standings

The Cup, named after the first and then President of the National Hockey
League, Frank Calder, has its origin in the very first year of AHL
operations. Calder was a man who would rule professional hockey's premier
league from 1917 until his death in 1943. Born in England in 1877, Calder
emigrated to Canada at the turn of the century and became a schoolteacher.
He later went on to become a sportswriter with the Montreal Gazette and
eventually served as secretary of the National Hockey Association,
forerunners to the NHL. Montreal Canadiens owner George Kennedy was so
impressed with his work that he recommended Calder as the first President
of the NHL in 1917.
