June 11, 1999 @ AAU Nationals, Oklahoma City
Pool Play - Game 3
Chicago Swish 69, Maine Hurricanes 55

In the pivital game of the tournament, one that would determine whether the Hurricanes would make their third consecutive appearance in the Medal Round, for the first time in our Nationals experience the Mainers blinked...

In a game where there shouldn't be any need for external motivation, we came out with no fire. Nothing went our way, as we started the game flat and finished much the same way. The halftime score saw the 'Canes down 37-29 to a team that didn't have nearly as much talent or experience. We never got it going on either end of the floor, and in turn missed the medal round for the first time ever.

Val Dumais and Chantal St. Laurent led the charge for the Hurricanes with 14 and 12 points respectively. Katie Stailing added 8 points while Kandace Jones, Bethany Roderigue and Crystal Stilwell added 5, Sarah Methvin 4 and Katie King 2.

June 10, 1999 @ AAU Nationals, Oklahoma City
Pool Play - Game 2
Potomac Valley Classics (Maryland) 87,
Maine Hurricanes 72

This was a win that slipped away...

Facing the defending national champions, these Maine Hurricanes made New England proud. The first half saw the Classics jump out to an early 16-8 lead, before the Hurricanes settled in and fought back to take the lead at halftime, 36-35.

In the second half with 6 minutes remaining in the game, the 'Canes still led by 4 points, when in a matter of 30 seconds both of their starting forwards fouled out. The Classics took control of the boards from then on and took the lead. They extended their lead down the stretch as the 'Canes were forced to foul in the last minute of play.

Maine's Katie Stailing, Chantal St. Laurent, and Bethany Roderigue led all scorers with 24, 17 and 17 points respectively, proving that their little basketball team from Maine can play with anybody in the nation....

Sarah Methvin added 5 points, Val Dumais 4, Crystal Stilwell and Katie King 2, and Natalie Dupill 1.

The Hurricanes next face the Chicago Swish on Sunday morning for the chance to advance to the double-elimination medal round for their third consecutive year.

June 10, 1999 @ AAU Nationals, Oklahoma City
Pool Play - Game 2
Maine Hurricanes 62, Boston Revolution 60

Well, we certainly got this tournament off to a thrilling start... Despite falling behind 17-2 to start the game, these 'Canes never rolled over and quit. After a frustrating first 10 minutes, the Mainers pulled it together and shook off their nervous energy to claw back to within 2 points at halftime. Katie Stailing hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to bring the 'Canes within a bucket as the first half of play ended.

The second half saw the 'Canes and Revolution battle back and forth in a very evenly matched contest. With 9 seconds left, and the score tied at 60-60, the Hurricanes had the ball and called timeout. A play was drawn up, and the Mainers executed to perfection, with Valerie Dumais knocking down a foul line jumper as the final buzzer went off giving the Hurricanes a thrilling 62-60 victory...

Hurricane Maine has struck Boston.

Chantal St. Laurent and Katie Stailing led the Hurricanes offensive attack with 15 points each, while the entire team contributed to the 'Canes vaunted defensive presssure.

Crystal Stilwell had 10 points, Kandace Jones 7, Val Dumais 6, Katie King 5, and Bethany Roderigue 4.

Next up for this group of tough Mainers are the defending national champions, Patomac Valley Classics from Maryland. Game starts at 4:20pm this afternoon.

Hurricanes 85, Vermont Cougars 40
Balanced scoring was the tone of this run-a-way as Stailing, Roderigue and Dupill all hit double figures with 17, 15 and 15 points apiece. Giving even more balanced scoring were Katie King, Methvin, Stillwell with 9, 8 and 8 each. The team rebounded very well and the running game was in high gear as the Hurricanes scored 52 points in the first half. Foul shooting continued in favorable figures as the team shot approximately 70%.

Vermont Spirit (16's) 64, Hurricanes 58
The Spirit came in with fresh troops and had the crying towels working in their favor as they managed to defeat the Hurricanes, again. They had taken our favorites in an earlier tourney by 10 points. Katie Stailing was the enforcer with a game high 31 points. Roderigue followed with 9, while Val Dumais and Crystal Stillwell added 5 points each, Chantal St.Laurent finished with 4.

Hurricanes 49, Maine Northstars (16's) 45
The match-up of the weekend proved to be just that as the two Maine State Champions in the 16 and 15 age divisions battled throughout the contest. The elder Mainiacs came out early and shot their way to a 6 point lead. The Northstars held a slim 2 point lead at the break.

Down by 5-6 points in the final 2 minutes of the game the Hurricanes regrouped, refocused and found a way to finish off the highly touted junior class. Stailing and Roderigue finished up a fabulous weekend as they scored 23 of the Hurricanes 26 second half points. Stailing was the games high scorer with an all around 23 points, while Roderigue was the games second leading scorer with a marvelous 14, 12 in the second half and 7 in the final 2 minutes of the game. Val Dumais added 5 points and ran the point to perfection, while Katie King added strength and rebounding inside with 4 points and several key rebounds. The Hurricanes indeed were focused and determined in this the match-up of the weekend.

More of the same is on its way as the Hurricanes will take their talents to Albany, June 12-13 as they will face the Boston Revolution, Hudson Valley Knights, New Jersey Monarchs and the Connecticut Starters in that order, Saturday and Sunday.

The following week they will travel to New Bedford, MA for the New England Tournament of Champions hosted by the Bristol Stars. They will face the Revolution again, as well as the Mass.Wildcats, Mass. Whalers, and the Bay State Magic 16's.

That will conclude the official tourney schedule for the '99 Hurricanes before they take off for Oklahoma City on July 8th. July 2-3 the Hurricanes will play host to their new found friends from New Hampshire as they will play against Morse High School and Coach Methvin's new team the Jay High School Tigers.

May 15-16, 1999 @ Montreal, Canada
vs-Laval Select 16--Final score 60-51 (31-23 half)
Balanced scoring was the norm of the day as Stailing led with 12, followed by Beth Roderigue and Methvin with 9 each. Jones and Dupill hit for 8 apiece.

vs-Strafford County 16--Final score 63-46 (31-27 half)
Katie Stailing kept her level of consistancy with 19 points. Morse teammate Stilwell was next in line with 13, followed by Winslow's Roderigue with 12.

vs-Nobel 16--Final score 79-22 (44-10 half)
Did we say consistancy? Stailing 18 points, Dupill and St.Laurent 11 and Jones, Methvin and Stilwell added 8 points each.

vs-Montral Nomads 16--Final score 76-24 (42-9 half)
Did we say super consistancy? Stailing 15 points, St.Laurent 13, Methvin and Dupill 9 apiece (Methvin 2 treys) and Stilwell 7.

Sunday's games saw passing like no other Hurricane team has ever experienced. The 'Canes were passing the ball into their post players for 2 touches every possession. This small strategy caused what could indeed be the difference between the successes of Hurricanes in the past and the giant leap toward our eventual goal for the summer of 1999 and 2000. Nothing less than the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

April 17-18, 1999 @ Livermore Falls, ME - The Hurricanes had a very successful weekend going undefeated, 4-0, and winning each contest convincingly. The Hurricanes knocked off a tough Ocean State Shade (R.I.) 16-under team by nearly 30 points, edged a 17-under Maine team comprised of Dirigo and Jay players by over 20 points, and rolled over the 16-under N.H. Hawks twice by 40+ points.

The keys this weekend were the 'Canes much improved communication on the defensive end (thanks to some incentive from the sideline) and great ball movement triggered by "inside-out" passes to the interior and back out to the perimeter allowing the 'Canes to get much better shots.

Also this weekend marked the first live games played by the Hurricanes' "Tower of Power", Natalie Dupill, in over 8 months. She looked like she hadn't missed a beat, stepping in to contribute strongly at both ends of the floor.
