Sligo Rovers F.C.

Nicky in his Man. City days

Nicky Reid Profile:

Nicky Reid's playing career has taken him all the way from Manchester City to the very top with Sligo Rovers. A full back he played over 200 games for Manchester City before moving to Blackburn Rovers where he spent five years. He has also played for Bristol City, West Brom, Wycombe, Woking and Bury. He played for Man. City in the F.A. Cup Final of 1981 against Spurs. Unlike a previous manager of the Rovers, Lawrie Sanchez, he didn't score and his team did not win. The first match ended 1-1 and the second game will mainly be remembered for Ricky Villa's wunder-goal winner as he danced through City's defence. Spurs ended up 3-2 victors.

Reid is the fifth manager of the Rovers in three years. He replaces Jimmy Mullen, who for personal reasons didn't settle in Sligo with his family, as was agreed when he took the job. This led to him leaving the club by mutual consent at the start of this summer. Mullen will mainly be remembered for taking on a team unbeaten in the league and only in the final games did the spectre of relegation leave. Mullan's predecessor left in equally strange circumstances. Steve Cotterill upped and left at the start of last season after assembling a good squad which was capable of challenging for the title. Cotterill was Lawrie Sanchez's personal recommendation, Cotterill continued in the development of a strong team spirit and using his contacts well in England to sign some good players.
Sanchez had left Sligo to take up a coaching job at Wimbledon, the team he had won the F.A. Cup for in 1988. He was also a Northern Ireland international, winning three caps under Billy Bingham. He came to the Rovers after spending a year in the English Premiership playing with Swindon Town. However on the few occasions he wore the red and white of Rovers his pace more often than not let him down.
This was something that failed Willie McStay often in his days as player/manager. A full back he more often than not got away with it due to the rest of the defence and the midfield covering him. That may be, but Willie McStay will be remembered as the most successful manager in Rovers' history, winning a unique treble in 1994. That year Rovers caught up a huge points difference on Athlone Town to clinch the First Division Championship, they had won the Shield earlier that season and then to crown it became the first First Division side to win the F.A.I. Cup, beating local rivals Derry City in the final one nil with the goal scoring hero being Gerry Carr. McStay left Sligo to return to Celtic as Youth Team Manager.
