The Wannabe Prince Pages

Evil anime princes are a dime a dozen - er - except for Lotor of course - so you have quite a few out there. Here are some hits, misses and other Princes who ascribe to 'Lotor-ness.'

Prince Crotan of Mongo

You may or may not remember this prince, but he was in the 1985 series, Defenders of the Earth, which was about Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, Lothar the Strongman, the Phantom and their teenage offspring who were constantly fighting against Ming the Merciless of Mongo. Prince Crotan of course was his son. Anyhoo, Prince Crotan showed up nominally in some episodes but for five episodes he was in the spotlight. He had the same aspirations that Lotor did - basically taking his father, Ming's throne, which he did after he reduced Ming to atoms and carried him around in a small vial. He even had a witch (shades of Haggar)Zorelda helping him to try and conquer Earth!

In the course of these five episodes, Crotan not only offs Ming (in a manner of speaking) he also develops an infatuation with Jedda Walker, the Phantom's daughter. He forces her to go to Mongo with him to make her his Queen. However as you can see by the pictures, things go awry and instead of kissing his reluctant Queen, he winds up kissing a creature - one of his 'wedding gifts'. Jedda and the other Defenders get away and later Ming is restored to his throne.Lotor might have been slapped by Allura plenty of times, but at least he wasn't humiliated THIS way! Still Crotan looked Lotor-ish, even though he was more of a coward and tended to be a bully.

The Prototype Prince - Prince Bokar

Everyone remembers Prince Bokar right? He came along early on in Voltron, and it was he who saved Princess Allura when she lost control of Blue Lion. He was handsome, white-haired, and well definitely a pre-Lotor prototype in my opinion. Allura was attracted to him too - as you can tell by her blush. Nanny and Coran were pleased as well since Bokar was supposedly looking for a beautiful princess to wed. Lance was about the only one who didn't like or trust Bokar on the spot. However, after dinner and a night where the male members of the VF were attacked by snakes, Allura and Coran evidently trusted Bokar enough to give him control over the Blue Lion, for Allura handed him the key.

However, once he was revealed to be not who he was, he kidnapped Allura and forced her to fly the Blue Lion away from Arus to be met by Zarkon's forces. It had been Bokar's intent to bring Allura to Doom, however Bokar became incensed, both by Allura's stubborness and the fact that the other Lions were on their tail and revealed himself to be a snake type roebeast. Allura punched a button after fainting (?) and Bokar was sucked out of the hatch of Blue Lion, only to fall to his death. Bokar was definitely cool though and gave the VF a run for their money. Too bad he was a roebeast. There are some thoughts out there that Bokar might have been quite popular and so in came Prince Lotor - another white haired handsome prince - later. For more on this theory, I suggest you go to Valeta's Lotor, Prince of Doom website!
