"MacGyverisms"

This MacGyverism will help you to
see better when the weather gets foggy.

The weather's getting wetter, and the mornings foggier. If this is making your glasses a little harder to see through, there is an inexpensive way to solve this.

I'm sure many of you have heard that a little gel toothpaste smeared on the lenses will keep them clear. However, toothpaste contains an abrasive which can, over time, damage the coating on your lens. Perhaps even the lens itself. There is, thankfully, there is a safer alternative.

The ingredient in toothpaste which prevents lens fogging is called a "surfacant". This chemical causes the microscopic fog particles to break down. This sheeting action is what keeps your lenses clear.

Surfacants are also present in soaps and detergents. Without the grit that can damage the lenses (just avoid soaps labled "heavy duty", "industrial", etc.). I found the easiest type to be liquid hand soaps or dishwashing detergent.

Just smear a tiny drop on your lenses and wipe clean with a dry cloth or tissue (don't rinse). Gentle bar soaps also work fine. Wet the soap and wipe the suds on the lens as before.
