PENNY MICKELBURY
Gianna Maglione is a lieutenant in the Washington D.C. police department, and head of the Hate Crimes Unit. Her lover is Mimi Patterson, a reporter. While they try not to mix their personal and professional relationships, there is an inevitable overlap, and sometimes friction. The District is nicely depicted here as a city where people actually live and work, and not just as a place where the powerful cavort.
Keeping Secrets
Carole Ann Gibson is one of the most successful criminal defense lawyers in the District of Columbia. She is married to Al Crandall, an equally successful partner in a powerful corporate law firm. Successful, that is, until Carole Ann realizes she's on the wrong side in most of her cases and her husband decides to quit his practice when he can no longer justify his role in protecting corporations that not only pollute but poison the environment. When he tries to resign, he is murdered. Carol Ann's determination to tract down and expose his killers sets this book in motion. This is the first mystery that I've read that deals with the issue of environmental racism. Like all of Mickelbury's work, it is well written, with intriguing characters.
