The Early Explorers Come to America
                                      Chapters 1 ~ 2a
Early Explorers Rubric Checklist:
The following activities must be successfully completed before moving on to the Colonization unit. 

Activity 1:
On a map #1 you highlighted the areas where the Portuguese explorers traveled. The map is glued into your notebook. You drew a caravel below this map.

Activity 2:
Map #2 - You highlighted the voyages taken by the Spanish explorers Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cortéz, Navarez, Pizzaro, de Soto and Coronado. Colored the two viceroyalties of Spain on the map. The map is glued into your notebook. 

Activity 3:
Map #3 you highlighted the journeys of the Dutch, English, and French explorers of North America. The map is glued into your notebook.

Activity 4:
In a group, you created a five page newspaper titled Settling the Americas. You followed the criteria established in the Activity folder.

Activity 5:
Write a one page analysis of the Causes and Effects of the Spanish Exploration.

Evaluation Criteria
Exemplary

  • Maps are completed on time. This includes a title, a legend, a compass rose, a scale indicator, and a caption, is neatly colored, information is accurate, and glued in notebook.
  • Your newspaper was completed on time. The established criteria was followed. No spelling or grammatical errors were found. 
  • You were able to identify five causes and effects of the Spanish exploration. You explained the long term, the immediate, and the overall effects they would have on the future of the world.

  • Proficient
  • Maps are completed no more than one day late. Each includes a legend, a title, is colorful, information is fairly accurate, and glued in notebook.
  • Your newspaper was completed no more than one day late. The established criteria was followed. Few spelling or grammatical errors were found. 
  • You were able to identify five causes and effects of the Spanish exploration. You explained the long term, the immediate, and the overall effects they would have on the future of the world.

  • Incomplete
  • Limited time for make up work. Loss of 10% of grade per day late, up to three days. More than three days late results in a zero.
