This set finally adds the cavalry to Hat's Spanish infantry also to the CeltIberian and Lusitanians from the Carthaginian allies set. They can also be added to the Carthaginian or Polybian Romans.

This set gives you twelve cavalry made up of four different rider figures and two different horses.

The Horsemen are:-

  • Heavy cavalry in chainmail armour with long shield.
  • Standard bearer with small round shield and circular breastplate.
  • Light cavalryman with spear.
  • Light cavalry with sword.

The horses are in walking poses one has a saddle cloth with a border one does not have a border.

What are they like?

Scan of Stan's undercoated Spanish RidersThey are well moulded with good detail. The poses are active without being to overactive and unlike Hat's Gallic cavalry they don't look flat.

The heavy cavalryman has a plumed helmet and long shield, he holds his sword out to the side. The standard bearer wears a plumed helmet and a disk breastplate. He is sitting upright looking as if he is standing waiting. The standard is a boar and is another one of Hat's nice touches as by cutting just under the base of the boar you get a cavalryman with a spear. The light cavalryman with the spear wears a sinew cap and has his shield slung behind his back. He has a seperate spear which he holds pointing forward at his side. Like the standard bearer he looks as if he is sitting waiting. The light cavalry with the sword is wearing a plumed helmet and is waving his sword in the air. This is qute an active pose and he would look good on a charging horse.

Scan of Stan's undercoated Spanish Horses - I think he's going to try Mike Campbell's Cabots trick...

Scan of Stan's undercoated Spanish RidersThe horses are both well made and look good though I would have prefered a more active pose for one of the horses to make a more light cavalry style look.

Overall these are a very welcome addition to Hat's range not only because I can finally add cavalry to my Spanish armies but because they are nice figures. There is also another of Hat's nice little touchs with the standard. The box cover is another of their nice single figure pictures which are a great reference source for painting (note the borders of the clothes may have been deep purple not red).My only (minor) complaints are 1) two heavy and two light cavalry would have been a beter mix and 2) having a more active pose for one of the horses would have been a good idea.

I also managed to get hold of Cyril [Stan] Walker's sprue that HaT sent him. They give another perspective...
