Zvezda Macedonian Cavalry

Scans from Jonathan Rhodes
(comments by Nick Grant and Ken Gordon)

Just received these scans from Jonathan Rhodes of Zvezda's Macedonian Cavalry which have yet to be released here in New Zealand. They look pretty good...

Zvezda Macedonian Cav Sprue 1

(Ok, I can see Alexander's horse (top-middle-right), but Alexander...left - middle - left?)

Zvezda Macedonian Cav Sprue 2

Seems to be a good mix of Heavy Cav (DBx Kn(F) - that's how the Companions are listed for DBM), and lighter horse (DBx Cv and LH). I'd probably be tempted to replace the long plastic spears with 1/32nd brass rod like my Sarmations.

And here is the box art...

Excellent! The only 'negative' thing I can see from these images is that if you get more than one box you're going to end up with more than one Alexander!!

And this just in from Ken Gordon (Wednesday, 8 August 2001)...

Just a note to say I've just got the latest box of Italeri Macedonian Cav. They are the same as the Zvevda ones but a prettier box. 17 figs for GBP 2.99. They are worth getting for the Alexander figure alone.

What you get in case you haven't seen them yet is...

  • 1 Alexander
  • 2 Thracian light horse (with shields)
  • 4 Heavy Cav with shields and swords 2 types
  • 2 Heavy cave Beotian helmet and spear (Xyston)
  • 2 Companions with lance
  • 2 Prodromi
  • 2 Thesallian with sword
  • 2 Thracian? horse archers with separate shields
The box includes 6 different horse poses (all stallions!) and should prove very useful for other ancient armies. The animal skins are excellent. The only downside IMHO are the shielded heavy cav since Hellenistic cav did not carry shields until way after Alexander. I think they are supposed to be Companions who had shields for when they fought on foot. That said they will make great Carthaginian CV.

All in all a bargain. Note though that they are not moulded in the soft Italieri plastic but a much harder kind. Obviously Italeri are boxing and selling Zvezda which is great because they are more widely distributed over here.

And here is a scan of the stat's sheet that you get in the new boxes for their Age Of Battles game...(sorry the writing is so small, I had to reduce the image's file size quite a bit...)

Very many thanks to Jonathan for the scans and Ken for the coments.
