O Noble Merchantman

In Praise of Dryden Fassa

I don't know how you can like... oh wait, actually, I can. I love his hair. It's so cool... oo! And I loved that moment, you know, after he spent all that money on saving Van-sama's life, and then he goes "I can't believe it actually worked" or something like that, and then Hitomi looks at him like, "eh?" and he looks away and coughs. That was great.

He's handsome, he's clever, he's rich and he's not Allen Schezar.

MERCHANT PRINCE

Ah, Dryden! Brains, beauty, great hair...and besides, I'm a sucker for a guy with glasses ^_^ I find Dryden one of the more calmly intriguing characters of Escaflowne—he's not saving the world, but he's helping. I think he's the best thing that could ever happen to Millerna, and frankly, I'm not sure she deserves a nice guy like him, but maybe she'll grow up sometime and realize how much more stable he is than Allen!

The classic wandering rogue, Dryden is handsome, intelligent, and a superb strategist. If only Millerna would figure out that while he may not be as kawaii as Allen, he's a way better choice for a husband!

This man is highly undervalued, and usually overlooked in favor of Van, Folken, Allen, or psycho boy Dilandau. Dryden is an extremely intelligent man whose pragmatism is a breath of fresh air among the romanticism of the other characters. During the war with Zaibach, Dryden alone seems to realize the full destructive power of war and he tries to settle the conflict through economic rather than military means.
Dryden is also brutally honest about his own feelings and the truth as he sees it. He's not afraid to show his admiration for Allen's father, however Allen may feel about the subject, nor to let Millerna know about his feelings for her. For some strange reason though, the girl is stuck on Allen. Dryden sees this clearly and lets her go in one of the most moving scenes in the series.
Don't get the idea that Dryden is serious all the time. He has a wonderfully sly sense of humor, and isn't above poking fun at himself or his current situation. As far as looks go, he's convinced he's a good-looking guy and is more than willing to share this opinion with others. Dryden doesn't have the best fashion sense (that blue ribbon in his hair needs to go) but his glasses are quite spiffy. You have to love the flip-up shades on those things.
