Hal has rescheduled his October tour of Ireland for personal reasons, the new dates are as follows:
![]() I only met Keith one time when he was on tour with Hal in the UK in 2008, I wish I could have had the chance to see him again. I would like to express my sadness at the loss of this great bass player and from all accounts a wonderful person too, and my thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Keith xx ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() The UK magazine Country Music People has a review of Hal's new CD in their December issue. Here is what the reviewer John Philibert had to say: There has always been something of the left of centre to Hal Ketchum’s music. Whether it is anything to do with his Yankee origins up in New York State I couldn’t say, but there has always been a fusing of rock and pop and a folkie singer-songwriter sophistication amidst the fiddles and steel of his Nashville recorded albums. This approach has manifested itself markedly on Father Time which shows influences of such artists as Paul Simon and other non country acts and where a Tom Waits song sits (almost) comfortably with the original Ketchum material. Keeping the mood sombre, the following track, Yesterday’s Gone, is a waltztimed autobiographical piece about the passing of his grandfather (actually a compounded song about both his grandfathers according to his description in the liner note) although the lilt of the melody and the litany of happy memories left behind keeps it from being too overtly sad. The album finally starts to kick with the arrival of the third cut, the corking Millionaire’s Wife, which is a purple tale of wrong doing, cheating, murder and imprisonment all set to a strutting faux Bo Diddley beat. The track has a strong, smouldering build that takes in snappy percussion and a gospel call and response sequence and even Howlin’ Wolf like wails at the close. In an album that relies more than a little on midtempo pieces, another good rocker is If You Don’t Love Me Baby (Just Let Me Go), a co-write with Al Anderson, which whatever it lacks in lyrical introspection makes up for in abandoned joi-de-vie. Surrounded By Love is another deeply personal song, written quickly by Ketchum while the session was still ongoing, about and dedicated to his father and describes childhood happiness that came without money or possessions. Ketchum emotes well with earnest throaty vocals and there is plunking banjo in the mix from Ketchum himself (he wrote the song on the instrument) and fiddle keeping it well down-home. Simple but so effective. Another goodie is Ordinary Day, written with Darrell Scott (who plays guitar on the session) and unusually tells a story from a female perspective (although if novelists can do it, why not country songwriters?), in this case a waitress. Slow measured and chock full of nicely observed everyday, even mundane, yet effective touches. Not everything is quite as successful, Million Dollar Baby aims for a kind of Continental Café feel but doesn’t quite make it while the duel tempoed Continental Farewell is way too clever and tricksy for its own good. The Tom Waits song, Jersey Girl, is OK enough (and is touchingly dedicated to Ketchum’s wife who is from that part of the world) and has an easy bounce but probably needs its idiosyncratic writer’s personality to sell it completely successfully. Moreover, at 14 tracks, many of which exceed four minutes, there is, it must be said, the occasional moment of dullness. However, when Father Time works, it reminds us of what an inventive and accomplished writer/performer Hal Ketchum is. His fanbase, which is strong and loyal, should lap it up either way. Hal's 'Song of the Month' at the moment is called 'Take It All Out On Me', you can hear it on his official website. ![]() Hal fan Sue has created a post on Google Earth, showing all of Hal's concert venues, with links and photos. There are two new cds coming out this year! The first one is a re-release of my greatest hits on Curb Records, with a new cover. Look for that May 6th. What I’m most excited about is the brand new CD with 14 new songs that I just finished before I left the US. I recorded them at Curb studios live to two track and couldn’t be happier with the result. I don’t have the release date yet, but it is this year for sure!!!! I will keep you posted when it becomes available. Keith, Nico, Scott and I are having a great time musically on stage and look forward to all the upcoming shows. Hope to see you out here! Take Care of One Another, Peace, HAL The new 'Greatest Hits' CD is already available to pre-order from Amazon both in the US and the UK. ![]() Not sure if I have mentioned this before, but there is an interview with Hal on the BBC Radio 2 website, I think it was recorded at the 2007 Americana Awards. Hal talks about the CMA awards, songwriting and touring the UK. [18 March 08] Kiss-Ass Country interviewed Hal on their show on Dundalk FM 100 on Wednesday 19th March. It's one of 15 tracks PLUS 2 bonus tracks performed during the show. The songs featured include Small Town Saturday Night, Past The Point of Rescue, Hearts Are Gonna Roll and Mama Knows The Highway. The DVD is fully featured and includes the discography of Hal’s work and has individual song selection and “Bonus” footage of the encore. It was recorded in The Burnavon Theatre in Cookstown, Hal thrills a capacity audience with what amounts to a “Greatest Hits” show and for good measure throws in material from his latest CD, “One More Midnight”. Just a reminder of the UK and Ireland tour dates:
Hal performed at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday 15th March, he sang three songs, 'Surrounded by Love' (2hrs 21mins) which he said he wrote on Wednesday, 'On the Day He Called Your Name' (2hrs 25mins) which he wrote on Monday, and 'Million Dollar Baby' which was written two weeks ago! There was also a short interview with Hal from his dressing room (2hrs 42mins), he said he had just cut 15 songs in 2 days live to 2 track with the greatest band he could assemble in Nashville, not sure of the correct spelling but it sounded like Dennis Crouch on double bass, Aubrey Hanney on fiddle and mandolin, Brian Sutton on guitar, Russ Paul on guitar, Chip Davies, Eddie Berris and Paul Lyne on drums and percussion, and Angie and Gayle who are gospel/soul singers. Hal said the album should be released very soon because when you cut live to 2 tracks, it's already mixed, it's done. Hal talked about his girls, the cruise he went on recently, and his project with Steve Miller, apparently that is going to happen the first two weeks in May.
