 Frequently Asked Questions
Why the top 35?

Two reasons really. First, when running the first scoring formula, 38 teams scored in the top 20 in an event at least two times.  Since 38 would have been an even more ridiculous number, we chose 35 teams. Second, with the size of the dragon boating community today, guessing that there are at least 350 teams in Eastern Canada would be a big understatement. This can be an unofficial top 10% or 5%.

 Who are you?

Ahhhh, wouldn't you like to know? Because of the controversy that would probably arise from this list, we will remain anonymous. Some of us race and most of our teams are listed in the top 35. The rankings here, except for the power rankings, are completely based on numbers so bias doesn't really exist for those rankings.

 How are these rankings calculated?

First off, we endeavor to make these rankings as transparent as possible. All our data is available for you to look at. If there is an error please let us  know by emailing us and we will adjust and re-rank if necessary.

The scoring is done as such. The teams that placed in the top 20 of any qualifying regatta received a score from 1 to 20 (1st place receiving 1 point, 2nd receiving 2 points, etc.). The teams' total score from all regattas are then divided by the number of regattas they participated in from which they placed in the top 20. Now we do make the assumption that a team that attends a regatta but places outside the top 20 was not at full strength and subsequently should not be penalized with a lower score. The average score resulting from the above calculation is ranked in ascending order to determine the top 35 teams in Ontario.

Schedule considerations were also taken into account for this score. Teams that only placed in the top 20 once were immediately thrown out since this does not prove consistency. The data for these teams are highlighted in yellow in the excel data sheet.

 Why the second ranking?

Simple. The average number of regattas that the top 35 teams participated in was 3. Teams that participated in only 2 benefited from not having their records challenged.  Consequently, a re-ranking placing teams that raced in at least 3 festivals ahead of those that raced in only 2 seems only fair.

How did you determine the Power Rankings?

We won’t kid you. These are very subjective. Although we use the mathematical rankings heavily in our decisions for the power rankings, we also allow for other variables such as consistency over entire regattas instead of just a good final, disqualifications that severely hurt a team's score and margins of victory. We debate, come to a majority for each position and move on to the next ranking slot.

How do you determine a qualifying regatta?

In order to not allow a team to travel to Timbuktu and pound on weak local teams for ranking points, a regatta qualifies for inclusion in these rankings if at least five teams participating in the regatta have top 20 placements in at least one other event (based on a rolling year). Also, since this is a ranking of the top teams in Eastern Canada, participation in festivals outside of this region will not be included. Furthermore, there must be at least 20 teams attending a regatta for it to qualify for rankings consideration.

Qualifying Regattas: Wildwood, Pickering, Welland, TIDBRF-Corporate, TIDBRF-Community, Ottawa, Waterloo, Montreal, Summer Sensation, Woodstock, Stratford and Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge (911).

Why wasn't the Summer Sizzler Included?

The Summer Sizzler wasn't included in the rankings for two reasons. First, the event runs over the course of a few weeks and is therefore inaccessible for teams outside of the GTA. Second, the Sizzler has yet to field at least 20 teams in its top division.

 Will this be Updated?

Definitely! These rankings are based on a rolling year. Each new set of results will replace the previous one and re-rankings will occur accordingly. Regattas that meet the qualification standards will be added or removed accordingly.

 What is the 911 Regatta?

Our apologies to those of you who are confused. Due to difficulties in fitting the headings in the Excel data sheet, we used the old name for the Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge - when only emergency services teams raced in the event.
