| | Interesting Ways of Life
These are some of the things you can expect to see and find in
everyday Dominican life.

Driving:
 |
Driving in the D.R. can be very
dangerous so if you don't know how the system works then please do not drive.
Here are some examples:
|
 | The person with the right of way is almost always the
one who got there first, or, the biggest vehicle.
|
 | Everyone uses the horn because it's there.
|
 | If you ever get caught by the Police for a traffic
violation it can be easier for a foreigner just to pay him off with may 100
pesos depending on how severe the situation.
|
 | There are speed limits but they are just
recommendation. Really most travel as fast as their car will let them
without hitting anything in front of you.
|
 | Passing cars can be done on the shoulder, sidewalk, or
other lane depending on what is most convenient.
|
 | There are many more motorcycles than trucks or cars
and they can appear from nowhere, so just listen for the unmuffled engine as
they roar around the streets usually carrying a large load like a six foot
propane tank.
|
 | The main thing is to just remember that driving in the
DR is an adventure.
|
Food:
 | Food preparation varies greatly among the rich and
poor, although the food eaten is common among both.
Dominicans favorite food is the "Bandera" (flag)
which
consists of rice, beans, and meat, and is eaten daily by most. Their main
meal is during lunchtime right before siesta (1-3 pm). Here are some
other interesting things I've seen when dealing with
food:
|
 | ice is frozen in bags called "funditas" and
broken-up with a spoon,
|
 | car wheels are used as stoves,
|
 | if there's meat sitting around you need a fan or use
of hands to waive off the flies,
|
 | mondongo is a special treat for many which
consists of boiled animal intestines,
|
 | their lemon juice is used as a cure-all,
|
 | and after a month of eating Dominican food I became
addicted for life because it is very satiating and mmmm tasty!
