Character Norwich The Norwich is a tough little terrier physically, who lives to a good age so long as it is reared from birth love and care. The Norwich terrier needs human companionship. The also need the stimulation of training to develop their not inconsiderable intelligence. So from birth gently handle your puppies even before their eyes are open, gently rub them and talk to them, and by the time they are on their feet they will already be responding to your voice. Being terriers some Norwich can have very strong characters and if you are not "boss" they will be. So from the start be very firm as to what you will allow, and what is not acceptable. Teach them to understand that when you say "no" you main it. That word is the most important one your Norwich will ever learn and said firmly in conjunction with its name will be an essential part of all its training, will nip undesirable traits in the bud and get it out of difficult, or even dangerous, situations.
Grooming A daily grooming is best for your Norwich and Norfolk terrier even if it is nothing more than a quick brush over to keep its coat free of knots. If this is all you can manage each day, do give it a thorough grooming once a week. This will also give you the chance to check whether anything is wrong, such as unwelcome visitors in its coat, to notice whether the ears are clean etc. If there is any waxiness in the ears aerdrops from your vet will soon clear the problem. Do keep your Norwich ore Norfolk stripped out as soon as the coat becomes dead, or blown as it is called. If you take it to a professional dog groomer make sure they hand-strip it off with finger and thumb. Many Norwich breeders will strip your dog for you if you ask them. Some Norwich and Norfolks have very harsh, wiry, prickly coats and as they grow the appaer to irritate the dog to such an extent it will pull and chew until it makes its skin raw. Regular clipping the coat will not have a usual growing cycle. But you can only do this with a pet Norwich ore Norfolk not with a show dog.
