The talians are composed of three major groups: the Tal E’r’n (tall ah-REN to the locals, tall ay-RIN to outsiders), the Tal A’me (tall ah-MAY), and the Taya (TAH-yah). These groups (except Taya who I’ll come back to) are also composed by multiple different state/cultures. Think federations. The odd part is these people, who have similar languages, cultures, and biology, all evolved on different planets. Although to be fair, their language and culture have integrated since first meeting each other, but the biology has always been nearly the same.
Once Talians started to come out into space they only related with other Talian nations because their planets were packed into the same area of space. Of coarse it didn’t take long, ~75 years, for them to run into to non-Talian aliens. Relations were not good. It would have been one thing if they’d run into humanoid species, but NO. Talian space has to be surround by weird aliens, like the bipedal bird people, a bunch of funny quadrupeds, and so on.
So the era of the alien wars begins, briefly ceasing civil wars amoung the different Talian races. And they fight for a while. This ends when the Talians have carved their niche in this part of space. It then occurs to the Talians that the only real commonality between them is that they hated aliens (oh, and they look alike). Over the next series of centuries we begin the Talian War Era. So they try to blow each other up.
This is about where our series is set. Thanks to both a backward cultural tradition and the constant reshuffling of nations, the Talians have grown culturally at the rate that the US space program is growing now. Yup, backwards. That is until their cultural revolution over the last one hundred years (2247-2358). This was caused by three factors: Premier, the ending of there last Major War, although there have been a few minor ones in between, with rather crushed the unified culture of E’r’n (A’me is rather diverse). The big fear in our series is that the time is ripe for another major war and these colonies are too close to the border for comfort. Deuxième, entrance of the third party equivalent nation of Taya, to be discussed, which brought the introduction of i’Pa Mya. You can ask me later, but yes, it is mildly related to Maya’s name. Et troisième, the emergence of Terra (earth) as a significant power and the only other humanoid species. At the current moment, Terra is an ally of Tal A’me (what’s the difference between A’me and E’r’n ? Two letters and a funny accent) and something of blood brothers with Taya.
Taya evolved the way most Talian planets do, one day they find warp and they seem to matter. Taya is smaller than A’me and E’r’n and only made up of only culture. Taya used the hundred odd year war ending in 2247 to grow into a powerful space-fairing nation without having to marry A’me or E’r’n. The language and culture of Taya is the most varied from your average Talian. They also have a few genetic quirks.
The Tayan government is the official caretaker of Niana. Niana's Pan Mya Te is a derivative of the Tayan i’Pa Mya.
And that's the basics. More information about Talians can be found in the Glossary and Episodes of the The Artemis Project. |
