Text for lower numbered patents is not provided at the USPTO website but images are, but require the AlternaTIFF (or other tiff viewer) browser plug-in to view. A tiff viewer is also required to view the patent figures. AlternaTIFF automatically loads into the browser during use. When downloading the tiff files using AlternaTIFF include a .tif or .tiff extension so the files can be viewed offline in a browser or photo editor. Kodak Imager for Windows and Imager Previewer (both usually included in Windows 98) can display the tiff files without the extension.

Update (October 7, 2001): There seems to be problems with AlternaTIFF when using newer versions of IE. It still works for me with Netscape 4.74. Read details here: http://www.mieweb.com/alternatiff/
