Characters

There are three different races of characters in Final Fantasy Legend: human, mutant and monster. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, as explained below (monsters have a seperate section on this site, due to their diversity).

Humans

Humans are the primary warriors of Final Fantasy Legend. They start with higher hit point levels than most of the other races, and can carry up to 8 items in their inventories. Human abilities can be raised by items sold in shops. This allows you to directly control the character's advancement. Strong raises strength and Agility raises agility. Both scores can be raised to 99. HP200, HP400, and HP600 raise hit points, to a maximum of 999. Defense is increased by using armor. Mana starts at 0 and cannot be raised except by equipping a special item found near the end of the game. The only other way to affect a human's mana score is to use a Game Genie or similar cheat device. Humans start with higher hit points than most other characters. The only difference between male and female humans is that males start with higher strength, while females start with higher agility, and their starting items take advantage of these strengths. A party consisting of multiple humans can get very expensive, since you have to buy not only weapons and armor, but power-ups as well.

Basic human strategy

If you're going to play human characters, I suggest adding them at the beginning of the game. The humans in the various guilds all have fairly mediocre skills, so it's just best to add them to your party at the beginning and develop them as you play. If one of your human characters dies in the course of play, replace the character's hearts ASAP. In the long run, spending 10000 gold for a new heart can be cheaper than having to buy power-ups all over again.     On the first floor of the tower take the time to build your human's agility up to 25. If you intend the character to use the strength-based weapons such as the swords, build strength to 25 as well. Also, use HP200 to increase your hit points over 200. Once you get to the sea world (level 5), increase your stats to 50 and use HP400 to raise hit points over 400. In the sky world, (level 10) increase the stats to 75. Finally, once you reach the Ruins (level 16) increase stats to 99 and raise hit points to 600 with HP 600. Once your hit points go over 600, you can only raise them one hit point at a time, so use HP200 to save your gold. If you're patient enough, you can raise hit points to 999. Your hit points can even be raised past 999, but the game won't display any numbers higher than that. Be careful! If you raise the hit points too high, you may lose track of how much damage your character has taken.
When buying armor, equip the character with body armor, helm, and gloves. These three items will cumulatively add to your defense score. Humans without any armor will have a defense of 0. Buy the best items you can. Shields are optional. They do not add to your defense score, but they can be used to block all physical attacks made against that character during a single combat round. Some shields can also protect ALL party members from magical attacks. The best of these is the Dragon Shield which will block all damage magic, though dragon helms and dragon armor can make this ability redundant. Also, shields (except King Shield, which you can't keep anyway) have a limited number of uses.
When buying weapons, note that some weapons are based on strength, and others are based on agility. These abilities will determine the success of your attack, as well as damage inflicted. Success of some weapons, like martial arts, firearms and ordnance are also based on the number of time the character uses the weapon or skill. A character only needs to have one weapon equipped at a time, though you may want to equip the character with a sword when fighting individual monsters and a weapon like the SMG for attacking groups. Don't use the mana-based weapons or spells - you won't be able to inflict damage with these.

Mutants

If humans are the warriors of Final Fantasy Legend, then the mutants are the magic-users. Mutants can learn up to 4 special skills, and hold 4 items in their inventories. Advancement occurs automatically. Hit points, strength, agility, mana, and abilities are all gained by fighting battles. Defense can be raised by armor, and will sometimes rise as a result of combat. As with humans, males have higher strength and females have higher agility.
The biggest problem with mutants is the unpredictability of their advancement, because there is no way to know when a change will occur. It is best to check mutants characters after every battle to see if there are any changes. Using certain weapons and skills to seem to boost certain abilities. For example most swords will boost strength, rapiers and sabers boost agility, and magic and psi weapons boost mana. I suggest using sabers with mutants as this will cause their agility to go up. Characters with higher agility strike sooner in combat, and a mutant with a high agility will allow you to cast a spell that can destroy your enemies before they can strike you. Mutants may start out weak, but if you are patient and careful, a mutant can easily become your most powerful party member.
