The monsters of Final Fantasy Legend are both allies and enemies. This is one of the more unique aspects of all the games in the FFL series - the ability to use the monsters as player characters. Monster characters vary in ability. Some monster races are powerful as fighters, while others rely more on magical abilities. A monsters ability can only be changed by eating the meat of a monster defeated in combat. There are 30 different groups of monsters: 25 "races" which can be used by the player, 4 groups of monsters which cannot be played and the bosses. Each race and boss is described separately below.
The 25 player races all have 6 ranks each. The first monster rank is usually found in the first five levels of the tower. Rank 2 can usually be found through floors 6-10. Floors 11-16 are home to Rank 3, and rank 4 monsters are often found on the upper levels of the tower. There are some exeptions to this; ranks 2 and 3 of the weaker races are found on lower levels, while you won't begin to encounter rank 1 of the more powerful monsters until level 7 or higher. The player's guide for the game will list which monsters can be found on each floor. Rank 5 monsters are almost all found in the tower after beating Ashura. The 6th and most powerful member of each of these races is a player character only - you will not encounter them as enemies. Depending on meat that your monster eats, he can become any of the first five members of any race, until you face the second forms of the four main bosses. Once a monster eats the meat of the second bosses, he will tranform into one of the rank 6 monsters. After becoming a rank 6 monster, meat will only transform your monster into another rank 6 monster. The 4 non-player races only have 5 ranks each (this is because you can't tranform into one of these monsters, and rank 6 monsters are never encountered). You will encounter the 5 ranks of these monsters on the same levels as the player monsters. Finally there are the bosses. Each is unique and described indiviually below. You will always encounter a boss in the same place, and once defeated, no longer remains a threat (although the bosses of the four main worlds have two separate forms which must be destroyed).
Insects | Fish | Eyes |
Each race is described below. The strengths and weaknesses of each race is described, as well as the usual attacks. Each rank 6 monster is described in detail. A table will list the stats for each monster.
The first monster race is
composed of various crawling insects (although
scorpions really aren't insects; this is a
convienient description for the group). The highest
ability of all six insects is Defense. Agility is
also very high. This means that these monsters will
often strike early in combat, and they can absorb
more damage. The weakest ability is strength, so the
wont inflict as much damage as mosters in the same
area. Mana is also low, but insects usually rely on
physical or status changing attacks. This makes them
relatively mediocre combatants. A bite or
pincer attack is common to all monsters in this
group. Most are also xIce. The best attacks against
these monsters are agility draining effects like Sand
and Electro, and Ice or Chill.
Rank 6:
Scarab. The
Scarab's main attacks are Bite, Acid, and Bash. Acid
can usually bypass oWeapon, while the other attacks
are basically physical in nature. In addition, it
has Raise and Telepor, which are mainly party support
abilies not used in combat. The Scarab really isn't
one of the better Rank 6 monsters.

The second race is composed of
fish. Fishes' strongest ability is agility, which
allows them to strike early. Fish generally attack
with fins or bite attacks, and are all oFire. Most
are also xElec as well. Fish are relatively good as
fighters. When fighting fish, you may wish to
use Electro and Sand to slow them down. Of course,
Thunder or Elec is the best attack against
them, and they are susceptible to criticals from
Coral and Elec Swords.
Rank 6: Leviathan.
Leviathan can attack with fins, bites and its tail.
It also has a whirl attack which hits all enemies,
but won't wipe out the more powerful parties due to
Leviathan's relatively low mana score. Leviathan is
good if you need a fighter monster.

Large floating eyes are the third race of
monsters in Final Fantasy Legend. Their
strongest ability by far is Mana. This makes them
one of the more powerful magic-using monsters in the
game. Most eyes have a Beam attack, which is counted
as a non-elemental magical attack. Eyes also use a
variety of gaze attacks which have varying effects,
the weakest being sleep, and the strongest being
death. Because they are floating monsters, they are
all oQuake. They have no specific weaknesses other
than a low agility, so the fastest characters in the
party are the best choice to attack. Strength is
also low, but since an eye's attack is magical in
nature, this doesn't matter anyway.
Rank 6:
Beholder. The Beholder has two beam attacks; the
second one causes instant death. Beholders have 3
gaze attacks: the first one curses opponents, the
second turns them to stone, and the third is instant
death. Beholder has a suicide attack, Explode, which
causes damage to all enemies, while killing the
character. This is best saved as a last resort.
Warning will make it harder for enemies to surprise
the party. Beholder is a good choice for a
magic-using monster
