The Atom

Following is a list of heroes, allies, and friends that have made appearances in the Atom's life. The list is alphabetized by last name if applicable.

A

B

Bat Knights, The - Descendants of 'the Little People' of myth, these Bat Knights attacked the Atom on two seperate occasions, but on the first occasion it was due to their prejudice towards "big people" and on the second it was because they were being controlled by a cruel man. Both times they parted as friends and on the second, the Atom sealed them up in the underworld so that they could be left in peace.

Brawler, Norman - Writer of "The Atom's Farewell", Ray's autobiography.

Brice, Don - CIA Agent who died in Power of the Atom #1.

C

Carr, Snapper - official 'Mascot' of the silver age JLA, Snapper betrayed the JLA secret sanctuary location to the Joker and was stripped of his JLA membership. His role in the DCU diminished considerably after this event, but he made a significant comeback recently as a friend to the new android Hourman. Snapper and Ray always got along well prior to the betrayal, and they've not appeared together since.

D

Doolin, Gordon - aka Gordon Heath. Showcase #35 introduced Gordon Doolin, who changed his name to avoid the family curse. The Atom helped Gordon reclaim his inheritance and avoid the "fake" curse, that was being perpetuated by one of the household staff.

Jeffries, Alvin - Norman Brawler's physician. Jeffries was called in to examine Ray after he returned from the Amazon and was stuck at three foot height. (Power of the Atom #2)

K

Katarthans - A race of yellow skinned humanoid aliens. The Katarthans were an alien race of people who started off as full size, but were subjected to radiation from a lead in tkeir ship's engine, which was powered by a white dwarf star fragment. The Katarthans had established a penal colony in the Amazon jungle called New Morlaidh where they had sent their criminals to be exiled. The Atom remained with the Karathans for a little over a year, where he reigned as their ruler. All Katarthans in the settlement were wiped out when the CIA firebombed that section of the Amazon jungle. (Sword of the Atom #1-4, Sword of the Atom Special #1-3)

L

Laethwen - Princess of New Morlaidh, Laethwen was a member of the Katarthan race and ruled over them fairly. While the Atom remained in the jungle, she became his bride and they ruled over the Katarthans together. She died in the CIA firebombing of the Amazon jungle. (Sword of the Atom)

Loring, Jean - Formerly Mrs. Ray Palmer, Jean was Ray's girlfriend through his later college years and became his wife many years later. They divorced, mostly as their marriage had decayed into apathy for the both of them and they chose to go their seperate ways.

Loring, Professor - Jean Loring's father was also a trained scientist and one that Ray Palmer looked up to. The Atom once saved Professor Loring from "the Iron Curtain" in Atom #21.

Midge - Snapper Carr's Girl

N

Negrini, Enrichetta "Enrica" - Research scientist at Ivy University and long time friend of Ray Palmer. Enrica was always fond of Ray, seeing him as a sort of rival in the department. She had a brilliant mind and eventually married another scientist and moved away from Ivy Town.

O

P

Palmer, David - Father of Ray Palmer. Born 1922, Died 1968. (Dates may be relative) This would place Ray's birth year somewhere around 1960, as his father died of cancer while in a hospital bed when Ray was a young child. His father was also a scientist of sorts. (First Appearance: Action #523)

Palmer, Raymond - Alter ego of the Atom II

Palmer, Susan - aka Mary Palmer? - Mother of Ray Palmer. Born 1928. Died 1975. Dates may be relative. Ray's mother had to raise her son without a father after David Palmer died. Ted Ralston, a good friend of the family and Ray's godfather, helped to provide a father figure to Ray as he grew up. (First Appearance: Action #523)

Pohrager - Katarthan citizen sympathetic to the rebellion. He saved the Princess, Atom, and Taren from the arena when the fighting began.

Q

R

Ralston, Ted - Godfather to Ray Palmer, Ted was Ray's father's friend before Ray's father died and Ted took it upon himself to see that Ray was raised with a father figure in his life. (First appearance Atom #5)

S

Shuffler, Don - Professor at an unnamed university. This was Ray Palmer's new identity after he called in some favors to disappear after he shrinked the CIA members known as the Micro/Squad. His anonymity was short-lived, however, as the new Atom (Adam Cray) began being hunted by the Micro/Squad and Ray came out of hiding (in disguise as Sting) to discover the masterminds behind the plot. It is unknown as to whether there was an actual Professor with this same name. (Suicide Squad)

Mr. Simmon, Bank President of the Ivy Town Bank - Brief appearance by this Ivy Town Bank President in Showcase #34.

T

Taren - Katarthan rebellion leader. Taren was captured along with Atom when he first arrived in the Amazon in the Katarthan's area. Taren's eyes were ordered to be put out by Deraegis, the King's Advisor. As their society did not place any value on those who could not fight, Taren cast himself into a swarm of flesh eating ants, dying horribly. His sacrifice fueled Atom's rage against the kingdom and his dying wish made Atom the leader of the rebellion.

Teljas, Anton - Hungarian refugee and clockwork expert, as well as former detective in Hungary. Anton emigrated from Hungary to the United States and set up shop in Ivy Town's Thornwood Jewel Salon. He was implicated in a theft of jewelry almost as soon as he started his position, but took it upon himself to recover the stolen items. With the assistance of the Atom, Anton was able to stop Chronos from escaping with the jewels and cleared his name. He has a daughter named Eva. (Atom #13, Atom #28)

U

V

Voss - A Katarthan who was second in command of New Morlaidh's forces, second only to Atom. (Sword of the Atom mini #1-4, Sword of the Atom Special #1, #2)

W

Waller, Miss - Civilian head of the Suicide Squad. Miss Waller gave Ray Palmer the opportunity for a new life, since his identity had been compromised. In exchange, he had offered his original size-weight control belt for a member of the team to use during his absence. Adam Cray took up the belt and worked for Miss Waller during his short tenure as Atom III.

Wilson, Alma - Woman in Showcase #34 who was accused of robbing the bank. She was acquitted, due to the arguments of Lady Lawyer Jean Loring and the exploits of the Atom. She next appears in Showcase #36, where she meets a man (Jim Barnes) accused of robbery. He is also acquitted of his crime by Jean Loring and the Atom, and ends up marrying Alma, who presumably becomes Alma Barnes.
